Hi, What do you think has happened to this large cent? Aside from being generally worn and circulated, has it been dipped/polished? It's quite glossy-looking. Has a nice 20 degree rotated die at least.
A long, long time ago kids used to play a game in cities where the concrete sidewalks were made with crack lines between each section. The idea of the game was to flip coins to see how close you could get to the second or third crack line and the closest person won all the coins. This game used every type of coin possible and the results made the coins all look like the edges of that one. Large Copper coins like that stuck more than bounced so were used as much as possible. As to why so clean, it was just cleaned.
Laid in the ground a long, long, long time. :stooge: The pit became a Superfund site. Corrosive chemicals leached through soil and beat down on this poor fella. While doing cleanup, workmen found it and scrubbed it reeeeeeeeeeel good.
Check these listings out - see http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZleamon6313 - all the large cents look like this. PLUS all the thumbnail pictures look the same color - for copper and silver. Not saying anything about the seller or the auctions I just thought of this poor coin when I saw these auctions.
