I found a 2007 can't see a mint mark on it with an unusual texture and color. Can anyone tell me what happened here?

Damaged surfaces after the coin was already
    in circulation.

Others can chime in with what happened to
it exactly, (Buffed, probably), but sorry, it's not
an error coin of any kind.

I can see a mintmark but can't make it out due to the damage. Looks like is was treated with some form of acid.

Thanks appreciate the info. I'd like to know what would make a person put acid on a coin. What bugs me is it's the first Montana I've found.

Acid erosion can be something as simple as a coin laying in a puddle of Coke-Cola in the drink holder of your car. However bored people have certainly been known to mutilate perfectly innocent coins too.

anytime I get dirty change with stuff on it, and I collect a bunch I'll end up putting a small bunch into a jar of acid to clean the bad gunk off of it.

so ... it happens. That excludes stuff like Coca-Cola which is probably worse. Remember, use Coke to clean the terminals on your corroded car battery!!

Just of what Coke does to your stomach. Acid comes in all types, some by accident and others are trying to create an error to get extra money.

I thought you weren't supposed to clean coins and if you can (and I've had a lot that could have used it) is acid what I should use and what kind?

It's true you should never clean a collectible coin.

Everyday, run-of-the-mill, pocket change is a different story. Personally, I'd start with soap and water but there's more than one way to skin a cat.
