I had a good time watching parts of a couple of auctions. I have done this for many years, but still have some things to learn. I was late to one and bid too early in a timed auction. Auction #1 started at 3PM CET. I googled the start time in Houston and the first result said 9AM. Turns out the auction started at 8AM my time. I did not enter daylight savings time in the conversion & the auction was 40 minutes old instead of me being early. As luck would have it the lot I wanted most was late enough that I was able to bid, and win a sigma nut. This is my 4th coin of the first cast coin series in Vecchi. Dioscuri/Mercury series. AE Cast Semuncia (1/24th of an As), c. 280 BC. Obv – Acorn Rev - Σ. Cr. 14/7. Vecchi ICC 32. HN Italy 274 12.51 grams - 24 X 12.5 = 300 grams equivalent As Auction #2 was a timed auction where lots ended at set times. I wanted two or three lots, but would be out of the house when my lots ended. I bid early on one and won a 2 ounce weight to fit between the one and 3 ounce weights I have. 2 oz late Roman or early Byzantine weight The top right weight is 3 VNCIA or ounces and the next row are 1 ounce. I missed on a second lot in this auction when I bid with 20 seconds left and another bidder made 2 bids to exceed mine. I can not say I was Clioed when the other bidder was willing to pay more than me. I hope others had a good coin weekend.
I had a good run at the Leu auction this weekend. Won 3 lots in total and spent way more than I intended. Great fun, but I think I need an intervention...
Yep - been there.. best quote on my addiction came from my 16 year old daughter: "Let me get this straight Dad: you spend money on money you can't spend?" Had no comeback...... she dropped the mic on that one!
I put in some bids at Leu, but was too busy to be online when the lots were closing. Didn't win a single lot; lost some by hundreds, others by a nose.
Your wife is training her well. My wife modified her quote to: "you spend money you don't have on coins you can't spend (and some aren't even coins)"
Yesterday I was out and about but set my phone timer a few minutes before the Leu lot I was watching ended. I was able to place my bid in the nick of time and won it by a hair's breadth!
I watched them but was not in a mood to buy. So, I just sat and waited to see, if anything really went cheap...they didnt. In years past summer months were great for getting bargains, but I have not seen that this year. I think it says something about a strong market in general. There were some cheap group lots, but well, do I really need a few hundred more Byzantine coins? No.
