This was with a collection I bought 5 years ago from an 80 to man along with his silver coins. Assume it’s fake but before it’s play money I’ll post it for your thoughts
The old gent didn’t think it was genuine. He was in a wheelchair and going to a nursing home the next day. House was sold with closing in a week. If I told you that what would you say? Fake?
I collect CSA notes but by no means am I an expert. This note looks real to me. It's cut close on the left side but it appears most of the framing is intact. The bottom has been cut to the point the black framing is missing. The litho was done by Evans and Cogswell. It was engraved by Keatinge and Ball, Columbia SC. The serial number is 38877 and it was issued on February 17th, 1864. Both signatures are the ones that should be on this bill. The writing is constant with what I have seen. All of coloring is normal. The reverse framing is well within standards as compared to the obverse. On the reverse the lower right is a tiny bit ragged. The bill has a few small stains and it shows it's wear. This is all normal for a CSA note. Please hold the bill up to a light and check for pin holes. If any are present a small stain may appear around the hole. Not all CSA bills have pin holes or a pin hole stain but it wouldn't be unusual if it had these minor problems. That could be a pin hole(s) by the lower left 5 on the reverse. For all of these things to be present it would be the best forgery of any type that I have ever seen. Based on the photos I have given my opinion as to why I believe this bill to be the genuine article. It is a CSA (Confederate States of America) note. The serial number is on the high side and the overall condition is good so I would price this bill in the $75.00 range. I believe the number is T-69.
Thank you for the help for an old hard money guy lol I was about to put it on CL for $10. I think I’ll have another cocktail
T69 but value is half that. Very common note and easily available in choice VF and higher grades. Unslabbed UNCs can be had for $60. This note is low VF at best. I do like the sweeping numbers in the serial, someone liked their own handwriting there...
Here is one of my CSA notes. Actually two but they go together. This is considered a rarity. Not trying to hijack your thread but thought you might like to see something similar. The first 4 photos are the same bills. If you look closely you will notice that the serial number is the same on both bills but the plate number changes from 5 to 6. This was standard. Also note the plate number 6 is an error note. The serial number should be the same on both the lower left and the top right. The top number on plate 6 is missing the last digit. The correct serial number is 69771. Another thing to note is the Treasurer's signature on the lower right. It sweeps down from plate 5 onto plate 6. As @MEC2 said about your bill, the sweeping serial number in yours is very nice. The last 2 digits have sweeping 7's. The reverse of my bills is totally blank. Again this is normal for certain issues. The last 2 photos are the same bills but both are together so you can see the hand cut when they were cut from the sheet and the sweeping of the signature.
my dad brought home a bunch of those in the 60s when I was in a kid he got them from a stamp collecter and they were all between like this onion skin paper ! so I do know they reproduced them !! not saying that that's what those are but I would definitely have an expert look at them in person!

Yes they have been reproduced but I can assure your all of mine and the op's bills are the real article.
