Great story and find! Does the property have a large old tree outside and in view of the Master Bedroom? If so, then you might want to get the old Metal Detector out and search around it. In the old days, folks use to hide money and other valuables around such a tree and they could lay in bed and keep an eye or two on the hiding spot. Old brick lined wells and cisterns are also good places to look for hidden money and other valuables. If you have one or both of these on your property, check for any loose bricks within arms reach. People would sometimes remove a brick in the wall of the well or cistern, hollow a spot out behind it and place a little box with with the money and valuables in the hollow spot, then put the brick back into place without mortering it into place. Great find Oldman. I believe that requires pure grain Gradin" Juice. There are those that would pay considerably more than the coins normal value for toning like that.
That's an interesting question as to if it would be considered artificial toning or not. It was not done intentionally but it was done over many years (probably) by heat from the furnace, which I wouldn't consider natural. By the way that's a great story and a nice looking Morgan!
Thank you on the compliment on my little lovely I got here. That is a good question as to wether this would be called artificially toned or naturally toned. I don't even know how long this coin actually sat inside the vent. I'm thinking it was there for a very long time. But who knows. I was looking online to try to find something that would help me know if it would even be worth sending it to a TPG's and all I find are web sites saying things along the lines of its a gamble and one site I looked at said something about the coin being out at a TPG's for months. I just don't know if I want one of my coins being away from me for months? Anyone have any advice? I has a lot of trust issues with everything I see and read online if you can't tell.
So by that reasoning if a coin is placed in album or a coin envelope and left there for many years and it tones because of the sulphur in the paper - is that considered to be artifical toning as well ?
Exactly along the lines I was thinking... But now, I've gotsta say, that's one helluva pretty woman you've snatched up there, Oldman! :thumb: I know, I know. Some men got it, and some men just don't.
Some of you might remeber this topic I started a while back. I found this in the heating system in my house. Well I took the advise of some of my fellow CT members and had it sent to PCGS though my buddy that owns a coin shop. Well I got a phone call this morning from him saying he has it and he didnt sound thrilled. I could tell from the sound of his voice that I wasnt going to be happy either. I said Let me hear it. This is a word for word quote: Those SOB's sent it back as "QUESTIONABLE TONING". Whatever jack a$$ sat down to grade this coin was a moron. I replyed I agree. He said if I wanted, he could call them and tell them the history of the coin and see if its worth resubmiting. I said let me think about it and when I come down in a few days I will let ya know. As I fell like Humpty Dumpty yesterday when working on my house. So im pretty much a gimp at the moment at least for a few days. What do you CT fella's think? Should I have him call them. He told me that talking to PCGS customer service is like talking to a brick wall. But worth a try in this case. Your opionions please. In case you dont know the full story behind this coin. Please read the very first post to this topic. Thanks all. Oldman
When PCGS body-bags a coin for toning it is because they deem the toning to not be market acceptable. What that means is that in their opinion most people who would look at the coin would think it was AT. This is nothing new, it's been that way for years. PCGS has even been known to body-bag coins taken directly from sealed Mint sets for questionable toning - and PCGS were the ones who removed the coins from the pliofilm packaging. By the same token, you send the coin back in and it's just as likely that they would slab it. They have no consistency at all.
I think I might try a NGC next, After that , I am just gonna toss my hands up. At least I know the truth about the coin, and i guess you fellas too.
