Wow, that's a great type and a very nice score, @Orfew. Congrats! AUGUSTUS AR Denarius. 3.64g, 19.9mm, Rome mint, 19-18 BC, P. Petronius Turpilianus, moneyer. RIC 297 (R2). O: CAESAR AVGVSTVS, bare head right. R: P PETRON TVRPILIAN III VIR, Pegasus walking right.
Neat coins; congrats on getting quadrigas of both father and adopted son. Here are a few denarii - it took years to get the croc.
Nothing like getting that Grail coin you've always wanted, @Orfew. Congrats Augustus AR denarius 35 x 24.5 cm (13.8 x 9.8 inches). Mausoleum Augusti (1699 CE) Pietro Santi Bartoli Copperplate engraving on chain-linked cotton paper. (hand colored).
Several years ago I was looking for this kind of denarius but couldn’t find one that suited my fancy. Then a dealer friend of mine offered me the following one in gold at a great price and I snapped it up for Augustus aurei have always been rather rare and I wanted to have one in my collection: Aureus Augustus - RIC 206 (c. AD 1) - Lugdunum
Nice one @jamesicus.I would love to find an aureus at a decent price. Sometimes, we collectors just fall into something we weren't looking for. I have a Valens Solidus which happend to come along when I wasn't looking for it.
Wow, @jamesicus ! Great Aureus! Although my target is a Republic Gold (20, 40, or 60 Asses), I would really enjoy your Augustus Aureus! Well done!
The coin arrived today and I am thrilled. It is in much better condition than the auction photo suggested. For example in the auction photo the surfaces look reticulated. They are not! The silver is excellent quality. However, the real star is the reverse. It looks several times better than the auction photo. My photo is below, imho it barely looks like the same coin. There is minor pitting but in hand this coin is a strong VF. I wish my photo was better it truly does not show how nice this coin is.
