This thread is approaching 30 years old.
The date on the bill is not always the year it was printed.
There are plenty of bills that were still being printed 20 years after the date.
Is your bill rare? No. There's millions of them. Does it have a fancy serial number?
No. Does it have a printing error? No. It's worth 20 dollars.
In the future it may have a slight value above face because it is a small head note,
and eventually more and more of those notes will be destroyed.
But economically, it's not worth saving a $20 bill for 20 years in order to collect $21 or $22. It is worth more now as a $20 bill than 21 dollars in 20 years.

    It's a joke. It's from 2010.
The new poster said his bill was approaching 30 years old.
    Etc.

Can you head me into the right direction? I’m looking for a 1987 20 dollar bill.

The $20 denomination went from series 1985 to 1988A.....there’s no such thing as a 1987 $20 note.

Really!? So that’s why I can’t find one. And if I had one does that mean it was a fake?

So counterfeit? Or could it of possibly been a mis printed bill? Because I had one. It was my lucky/un lucky 20! My wallet was just recently stolen and with it was my 1987 20...

Typically counterfeiters try to get their product to look exactly like the note they are counterfeiting. I can’t imagine counterfeiters using the wrong series date. I’m unable to remember seeing an error note with a series date that does not exist.

Is it possible you are misremembering the correct series ?

I strongly suspect you had a 1981 $20. The 1 can look like a "7", especially in small print. Steve is right- a 1987 series doesn't exist. There were however 1985 series notes printed in '87.

Reminds me of how I've seen some of my friends read off the dates on currency they had (checking for rare/older notes), and they would occasionally read off 2013 series 20s as 2003.

You gentlemen rock! Okay so if it was an 85 series..would it say anywhere on it “1987”

    No, it would not.
What were the signatures on the note?

I’m not sure about the signature..So it’s actually my girlfriend who had the note. She’s so upset that her wallet was stolen. She did show me the note once. I’m pretty certain she’s telling the truth. But I showed her this conversation and she’s more upset now! She says that it definitely said 1987 on the bill. Hard to argue with her on this one even though you have convinced me it doesn’t exist.

Be careful, it could be thin ice you're treading on considering you've already shown her this thread ;)
