Looking at the closeups of the date, I see a bunch of parallel lines only at the top surface and not in the fields.

I agree with the CU poster that brought up the size of the 1st "1" in the date - it is way to tall on OP's coin. Actually the spread on the whole date is off.

Portrait looked wrong for some reason.
Any scrapes on the bottom of the jacket is a no sale.

The bottom tail of the 9 got me looking back at your coin.

My first impression is that the 4 is soldered on to a coin that has had the last digit removed.

The metal in the 4 looks foreign to the rest of the coin.

    Just my thoughts...

It is my opinion the OP's coin of this thread and the coin from the CU thread are not altered dates. They are counterfeits struck from a die and struck from the same counterfeit die.

I agree. The CU example is an exact match to this one. Clearly a struck counterfeit from the same dies.

I'll bet we are going to see a lot of these. They are good enough to fool a lot of collectors.

So what will be the tell, the line by the tail of the 9?

The two coins also have matching scratches in the field to the left of the shoulder.

Great thread here. It should be featured in my opinion. Any thread that outs the counterfeiters should be out in front of the collecting audience.
