The best way to start is with books. And Internet forums, and coin clubs and coin shows.

We all have a learning curve in this hobby, many of us learn through experience, but that experience comes at the cost of making mistakes.

Make mistakes you can afford to make, buy stuff that you truly like and try to do your homework before you buy stuff and you can avoid slot of the most common mistakes.

Most of all, have fun. It’s a hobby, not an investment.

The S minted coins are made for circulation, but only available by the roll or by the bag, NOT through actual circulation. They are not available in any Mint packaged set of coins, and this fact frustrates me a lot!

The D mint coins are as readily available as the Ps. Those two Mints provide almost all of our circulation coinage.

Just as @green18 said, do your homework. I would not turn down any coin or path that is within your budget or interest until you find the way you want to go. There are many scams out there. I went around in circles and collected everything, except I did stay away from those TV and U Tube Snake Oil salesmen. Then, after 70 years, I found this forum. These guys and girls are very good and very helpful. Good luck and welcome to CT.

S Mint Quarters, in my opinion, fall in the same category as
W pennies and W quarters. They were made specifically to enhance the revenue of the big friends of the mint. You can only get them at a premium from professionals. Fabricated Collectable.

Directly from the US Mint. Been doing it for an eternity myself.......:)

There are those who will tell you to collect these in the 'aftermarket' as they tend to be cheaper but I've always bought firstly from the mint. It's just my way........

If the price is agreeable then go for it.

You can also become a subscriber and get new sets annually without fear of missing one. If you want them and can afford it. You can tie them to a bank account or credit card. They will notify you and give you a chance to opt out before they send them and charge you.

Those are proof coins. The Mint also strikes S minted circulation strike Quarter Dollars, but doesn’t release them into circulation, or in any sets, only in bags and rolls directly purchased through the US Mint.

Yes, you can get them only from dealers at a cost of about $1 or more each. The old 'fabricated collectable' scam by the US Mint.

You mean get suckered into buying them in rolls and bags? What about proof sets?
    I'm so confused LOL!

It all boils down to what you like to collect. Nobody can help you with that. It's something that you have to determine for yourself. There is no 'wrong way' or 'right way' when it comes to collecting. You are the Captain of your fate........

What we are trying to say is that all too many coins from the mint are sold only in rolls or bags. And, even from the mint you have to pay a premium. You don't get a $20 roll of halves for $20. So, if you collect Kennedy halves and you only want one you are better off buying one from a dealer. Unless you have 19 friends and relatives that also collect Kennedy halves. Or, you plan to be a dealer.

NO. The whole point behind the W quarters was that the mint announced last year that they were planning to release a "rarity" into circulation. If they were then to turn around and sell those same pieces in sets or by the roll it would defeat the whole point of releasing them in circulation. In my opinion their mistake was in announcing before hand what they were doing.
