What do you grade this 1867 Indian Cent? A PNG dealer sold it to me as AU.

He said the lack of 4 bold, complete diamonds and the brown high points make this AU and likely cleaned due to the red color. I paid $230. I call it MS64 RB. I think he's crazy. What do YOU think?

@CircCam , this is the one going to PCGS with your order.

For one thing, with your photos I can make out the outlines of all four diamonds. For another, it can be confusing when high points are the first to wear and also the first to lack sharpness if the strike is weak. I also think this looks MS.

Seems like an odd assessment to me.. they’re still there even though not hammered.

When this is out there anything’s possible strike-wise!

I think you’re both right. He’s referring to the technical grade while you know from recent submissions that this coin will likely grade MS63/64.

I think I'll be watching with interest for the result. :)

I also think I might be able to formulate a better opinion if I could see how the luster shifts over those high points -- but I wouldn't stake my opinion against either yours or his. You've both seen more high-grade Indian cents than I ever will.

I'll wager MS 64; at least from the picture, I don't see it as AU (I could see a small chance of it returning as UNC Details - cleaned, but I don't think it will happen).

The verdigris to the left of the shield would have to be neutralized and removed, but really nice coin. It is at least a 58

My grade is 58 but I could easily see it at 63-4 rb

I acetoned that area before submitting, as you suggested. I'll post the trueview when it loads.

Technically, they gave it a break, as there's obvious wear in the hair.

Having said that, whether "AU64" or MS64, however one wants to call it, it's a 64 for the money, going away, and one outstanding coin. Nice acquisition.

I see no wear, just color change on some areas.

I think they call it "cabinet friction," these days, @C-B-D. Check them out in the online auctions. I think you'll see where the hair is a little "frictioned in." My term, just so as to not to honk off the cabinet friction experts.

Congrats! So which color is it? PCGS's or yours?
