MS-65 MS-66+ I'm intrigued! I got out my Cherrypickers, is it the 1883 RPM FS-1301? Can't tell if it's repunching or die cracks. Interesting to see what you say!
My source is Shield & Liberty head nickels by peters/mohon. There are 5 varieties listed 19.1 ,19.2,19.3 &19.4 are all rpds, the 19.5 is a rare ddo. Now for the 1883 w/c type there are 4 rpd. Since the die crack really circles the coin and the late die state strike....I believe this is a late die state strike using the same obverse die of the 1883 N/C reworked then used to strikes with cent coins. So as there are about 5 to 8 different repunched dates for both 83 WC and WOC . I like to see coin in hand Cherry pickers nails it at an fs-05-1883-1301 (013.7) So the variety adds about $50/70 premium.
So based on all the educated guys guesses.... I am taking that the flattening of the hair above the brow on the 1883 is not indicative of light circulation?
Why did you alter your grade from 65+ to 65 then? Was the scratch on the 1883 bad enough to affect the grade on the 1903?
The 03 is a little undergraded. I say 66. Those fields are super clean. The details are crisp. The scratch is deep enough to be a concern, so very nice on the 65 straight.
