Looks like a lot of displaced copper. There's been damage that is "similar" to this from can openers. And it can reside strictly on one side. This clearly looks like some type of damage such as that though different. There also seems to be just an "impression" into the metal going through the rim between "IN GOD". It's hard to know, without being the person(s) that inflicted the damage. When my daugher was into "novelty" stuff which included using pennies or quarters into "art work" I had to figure out how to get the design she wanted onto the coin. You learn some creative things to obtain stuff .. and you go through several iterations where you discard your attempts. I'm sure it will lead some "collector" crazy ...
Man, exactly what I was about to say. I laid a still spinning Dremel tool on my workbench once and that is exactly what the benchtop looked like.
