Neil Shafer has become a good friend of mine over the last 20+ years. He was a mentor to me when I was first starting out in collecting while I was in college in Milwaukee. He put together the Midwest Chapter of the International Bank Note Society which still meets on the second Saturday of every month in Milwaukee. I have a few of his books that he autographed. The only note that I have that he signed was a short snorter that we made up at the Midwest Chapter meeting in December 2007. I had everyone sign a bunch of $2.00 notes and we sent them as holiday greetings to the other IBNS Chapters around the world. If you want to meet him, have him paged at a show. I am not kidding about this. He attends most of the major shows (CPMX, CSNS, Memphis, St. Louis, London, Maastricht). He will be more than happy to meet and talk with any collector particularly young people and new collectors. His depth of knowledge on world paper money is astounding. Try it at the Central States show in Chicago in a couple weeks or at ANA in Baltimore this summer.
i first started out with coins and when a few friends went out of state they brought me back some of the countrys currency and i just feel in love. we need more colarfull money.
I'll tell you who inspired me to collect currency, all of you, especially De Orc, Daggarjon, Spock1k and RickieB. Your collections are amazing! :kewl: The color and history of each note is fascinating. It’s a thrill just to look at your notes that you choose to post. I started out collecting coins when my dad gave me some old silver dollars and copper Indian cents. I do have a nice coin collection of many different types of coins. All of you have opened my eyes to currency collecting. In the last few months, I have started and added to my currency collection, so much so that I have purchased 9 fractional notes and over 100 foreign notes. As you may know, I teach high school architecture and Auto CAD. I have students from many different countries & Americans also. I have been assembling old notes and sleeves, with note info, to give to each of my students. I have assembled at least one note from their home countries for each student. I have shown both coins and currency designs to the students throughout the school year. I will be giving each of my student’s a note this Friday. :secret: I have students from El Salvador, Guatemala, China, Russia, Estonia, England, Bangladesh, Nicaragua, St. Vincent, Viet Nam and the Philippines. For the American students, I will give $2 notes. I am trying to teach my students about different types of designs. I’m hoping to pass my passion for coins and currency on to my students. I will continue to do this for my students until I retire in a few years. It must be working, my student from Guatemala brought me a 1 Quetzal that is a green polymer and has a clear polymer window, very cool. :high5: Other students have shared with me what they know about their home country currency. I know that some of the students will be very excited to receive an old note from home. It’s also fun for me to excite my students. Jack
