The best examples of the nude male form seen on ancient coins came from Naxos, Sicily. The 1st coin seen below is a Tetradrachm from the Fitzwilliams Museum in the U.K., in archaic style. The dies were cut by the Aitna Master, circa 460 BC. The drunken Silenus is depicted with a full erection :jawdrop: on the reverse. In 2012 an example of this famous tetradrachm sold for over $900,000.00 . The 2nd coin done in classical style, circa 415 BC, shows Silenus with a pudgy body & a flaccid penis :shame:.

We've seen a lot of nude bodies in this thread. How about just the external reproductive organs?

"Pudenda virilia"-- it take some imagination and you'll have to factor in the George Costanza problem...

Or maybe the catalogers are simply wrong about what it is.

My reason for being is complete. I can go now. Imagine someone being driven to thinking rather than copying old thought....... and a lawyer. :pompous:
The hobby is not simply owning the coins but figuring out why we want to own the coins.

    That's pretty profound.

Or at least I think it is, having barely just graduated from the "Ooo, look! Shiny!" school of thought, myself.

"Whoa, is that a weasel on there?"

(* Now watch as @dougsmit effortlessly whips out an ancient coin with a weasel on it, and produces three paragraphs on its history without so much as blinking)

Struck by L. Valerius Asisculus in 45 BC. Crawford 474/4, Sear, Imperators 93, Valeria 21.

Obv: Laureate head of Zeus right, pickax (acisculus) and ACISCVLVS behind, all in laurel-wreath.
Rx: Anguipede Giant facing, grasping Jupiter's thunderbolt which has struck his flank, and raising hand in agony, L VALERIVS in exergue

The rarest of a series of coins of this moneyer, all of which feature a pick-ax on the obverse, a pun on the moneyer's name. The combination of Zeus with the defeated Giant presumably refers to the victory of Caesar over all his enemies.

Not my coin (and WAYYYYY out of my budget!), but I really thought this thread deserved this Syracusan Agathocles tetradrachm. It reminds me a bit of the newer version of the Mexican silver "Libertad" bullion coin. (Maybe it's obvious to many of you, but I just realized that Nike is the original antecedent of the statue commemorated on the Libertad.)

As for this tetradrachm, I think it's probably my favourite coin that I'll never, ever own.

This is a fun thread. Nudity in ancient Greece and Rome is rather interesting. It is said that men who were able to be nude and (not) erect in public showed a certain moral standard. Those who were publicly (erect) were looked down upon as not being able to control their emotions.

For me, if I have even my shirt off the women (and men!) will run with fear. I'm working on it..

It's very difficult to find female frontal nudity on Roman coins. Lots of Venus from behind, but I don't know of any coins that show female breasts in full view.
The closest I potentially have are the Gallic representations of Victory. The "breasts" could very well be drapery, and not anatomy.

Even the famous Knidian Aphrodite was not shown fully frontally nude.... although the legends say that some particularly horny man left a "stain" on the statue after a few kylixes worth of drinks.

    My favorite nude males are:

Hermes/Mercury on a lovely (and rare!) coin of Diadumenian:

If you want to see the family jewels, here's an unusual skinny-necked Licinius (as opposed to the standard Meatheads you see)

As long as this thread is back in business, how about a couple of naked equestrians?

I think the Roman Victory sometimes do show female frontal, which likely are not just drapery. The design is usually about Victory carving shields.

Here is one I picked up early this year:

You don't have to go back that far...just look at a few of the U.S. paper notes/silver certs from the latter part of the 19th century...and the SLQ of 1916-17.

In my collection at least it seem that most of the completely nude figures (ie not partially draped) are clustered in the Classic Greek, Hellenistic and late Roman periods.
