I agree mark field not enough ware to be vf, that's why I still think its xf+. I should clarify, I think the original posted coin is xf-45.

Mark I would have to say that when ANACS says XF Details, they are flat out wrong. I would however agree with a grade VF20 details.

As for the coin that started this thread, I would say it's XF45. Too many marks IMO for an AU.

not to stand on an island alone, but my grade for what it's worth is no better than VF-35. The luster is great, and waaaay better than what I would expect in a VF coin... in places. In fact, it's what I would expect from an AU coin were the luster on the obverse matching what we see on the reverse. In the protected area of the obverse (near the tiara) you see a great deal of luster. were the coin AU or even XF for that matter, I would expect to see that quality of luster on most of the rest of the obverse with broken bits on the high points. It's hard to tell from pictures, but my gut says that the obverse does not have the luster of the reverse, and it looks to me as if not only are there bad pits and lots of (for lack of a better term) "bag marks", but the prime areas of the coin have been harshly cleaned. Maybe by the original owner of the coin many years ago, who knows?

Look at the obverse where Liberty is, and you'll see the luster in the photo that's not there in the rest of the coin.

Peace dollars are tough to grade [for me anyway]. So this thread has been helpful.

Man, I love those (1927) Peace Dollars, very UNDER Collected/Valued coin. Only 848,000 struck is all, 150,000 (or so) less than the 1921 and 450,000 (or so) more than the 1928.

Good Looking Coin in MS-64ish condition.

    Take Care

Very nice coin. My '27 looks like I strapped some sandpaper to my dogs butt and let him scoot all across it!:(
