Isn't this statue supposed to be of Trebonnius Gallus? Seems strange that the emperor would pose nude if nudity was shameful.

At a quick glance, it looks like Jupiter is doing a Priapus imitation on this coin.

Actually, it's just his stomach muscle. But he's still buck naked.

The Eastern denarius dies that are spelled out are very rare. I have never seen a sestertius (all from Rome). You are correct about what happens when you work from worn coins and old listings from sources that may have copied the item without seeing it.

At risk of building my reputation as anti-museum and scholar: We would have to research the matter to have a valid opinion but there is a tendency to force famous ID's on statues that are of unknown persons. There is also a tendency for people to emulate then current famous people. When I was young, many women tried to look like Jackie Kennedy. Today we have some women trying to emulate Milania Trump. What I see here is a gladiator or chariot racer who was styled in the fashion of his day and resembled the emperor. Some dealer/curator added fame to the item by upgrading the label. I am not a student of this statue so you can prove me wrong by researching. Does the head even belong on that body? That needs research, too.

That said, there is a statue of George Washington half dressed as Zeus. Anything is possible.

My neighbors complained about seeing me naked in the shower. They told me to go back inside my house.

Nice thread. I am happy that nobody posted some sprintriae. For me personally they are not coins but only erotic tokens. Only obscene and opposite to what I saw here : ancient art !

Spintriae do not bother me personally but I think they might be a touch too explicit to fly here.

@dougsmit ... How dare you, sir? How dare you make so much sense online. The internet is supposed to be full of misinformation, and not common sense.

Now I have genuine questions about the ID of the statue above and feel compelled to do proper research on it instead of believing what the internet told me.

    'Tis our job, y'know.

I will also submit, however, the premise that moderators might just be as susceptible to clickbait as anyone else. ;)

I bought this Aurelian because Jupiter seemed to have a bit extra going on... although I think it's a just center dot with some connecting lines from Jupiter's cool cape.

Here in France we're less shy or offended by nudity than in the USA. None of the above would make an issue. Guns would though (different places, different manners)

Ocat, this is an interesting thread :D! I love those sexy depictions of Venus showing off her tush :shame:. Sallent made an interesting comment on the Pankration contest from the Olympics. From what I can remember reading all the contests in the early Olympics were done in the nude & women were not allowed to watch o_O, but the Romans were not as strict about this :). It has also been written that Elagabalus did chariot racing in the nude also, to know ones surprise . Attached below is a photo of a follis of Galerius as Caesar, with an unusually well modeled Jupiter on the reverse, struck in Alexandria, Egypt, 27 mm, 11.39 gm.
