    Hey everyone,

I’m back for another authenticity check. I’m looking at the attached coins on an auction website. I hope you guys can verify if they are indeed authentic. They seem so to me but I am not sure and don’t want to invest if they are not. What do you think they may be worth? One is a Nova constellation and the other is a fugio cent.

    Thanks for your time,
    Larry

What do you think those round holes in the fugio are?

Genuine, but I would look for an undamaged Fugio. I would prefer a more worn coin without damage.

Agree on them being genuine. The holes on the fugio bother me a lot. The nova is a bit rough too nut that I could live with if the price was right

The other side is if you buy a worn coin it will always be worn. I look for details and some damage because I prefer to be able to read the writing. I have a beautiful draped bust half dollar with some deep scratches but I absolutely love it. It’s the only way I can get a coin like this for an affordable price.

Talk about a problem coin, the reverse has issues as well. I would definitely walk away from the Fugio. :D Value? I have no idea, not my series or interest. Too many dollars involved for my taste. :D

I prefer coins with detail too if at a fixed price point (ie, not enough money to move up in overall quality). Worn coins with no damage don't do much for me to look intensely at the (lack of) details.

Each to their own. I evaluate everything.....based on price.

Coins like that don't really have a set "value". It really depends on how much you want it.

Unless you like coins with major problems, you'll never be satisfied with these coins.

I couldn’t resist. I paid $320 for the fugio and $165 for the nova constellation. The fugio seems to have VF details with some major flaws. However, It’s going to fill a void in my collection without breaking the bank. Do you think I did well or that I overpaid?

Personally, I think you overpaid, but I don't know those coins or collect them. I just think that's a lot for damaged and worn coins.

Well I can't say you paid too much for the Fugio cent as I know it's a big ticket item. ;) As long as you're happy with those coins, that's really all that matters right?! :D

That said, I would have waited for a better looking Fugio cent as I've owned problem coins in the past and not once have I ever been happy, to own one.

Assuming, of course, that spending the money isn't taking food out of your family's mouth or missing a bill payment...

I would look at it this way.

Do you want the coins more than the 500 bucks? Then you didn't overpay regardless of the condition.

On the other hand, is spending the 500 bucks going to keep you from doing something else that you would prefer to do over the coins? Then you did overpay regardless of the condition.

I see what you’re saying. It will def bring some joy seeing them in my collection. But I was wondering more from a value standpoint if it was worth the price. Can I resell them for the same value or more?

Tough question there. That said, that's normally a question I ask myself before I buy a coin in the first place. There used to be a couple of Fugio cent guy's on this forum but I haven't heard from them for years. Personally I don't think you'll be able to sell that Fugio for what you paid for it but that's simply a guess and I'm talking about pebay only. Post a poll and see what the other members think about your question. :D

Here's your first answer to the poll :

No, Nein, Nyet....I don't think you'll ever get what you paid for it back out of it.

The first thing any potential buyer is going to look at/talk about is the condition.
Remember, the first thing I said when I saw that coin is " What's up with those holes? ".
And when you consider the advice from the other members, you have to think those holes are deal breakers.

But that's just my answer to your unasked poll.....

Of course, wait a few years, maybe a few more Fugios will go missing and that might make your coin become a desirable survivor......warts and all, as they say.
