    If you're counting the reeding,
    then that's the 'portion sticking out'.

    As far as I know, you count the incuse bits, as the others have the same "height" as the plain parts of the edge. In the photo, the upper piece has the regular edge. The lower one has the error that occurred on a few Portuguese €1 coins dated 2002 ...
