Years ago NGC was tough as nails on Jeffersons...I sent many NGC coins to PCGS and received at least a 1 point better grade. Now who graded better NGC hands down. As to what my eye toid me the specimen actually was.....
I voted MS 66 as the two original examples look to be low end for the grade if not even a point too high. Your current 66 looks to be the best coin out of all four in overall eye appeal (and I'd pick it over any of the others).
I almost hope you are right. If it comes back MS66+, my decision is real easy, I keep my rainbow toned MS66 and sell this one. But if it comes back MS67, I have a decision to make. Now obviously the rainbow toned MS66 fits better in my collection, but I have an affinity for homemade coins. The feeling of conquest when you spend a few bucks on a raw coin and are able to add it to your registry set is extremely strong. It’s like a drug, addicting, and hard to overcome.
I could see that, identifying a coin "in the wild" makes it more personally liked than something you buy already identified. I have the same feeling when I rescue coins either misidentified or erroneously thrown into group lots as common pieces when in reality it is a special coin. It is one of my tricks at auctions to study group lots very carefully. If I can find two coins that are special and worth the entire lot price its more of a "win" than simply buying that coin at normal retail price. The chase makes it more personal and satisfying. If we ever met Paul I should have you go through my nickel rolls I bought 25 years ago from an old time collection. 4 BU rolls of 38 D and S, and 39 D and S. I have no idea if anything good is there, never having opened them.
Interesting thread. I think I agree with above comments on it being 66+ or 67. And I also agree that I like your current registry coin better.
I hear ya. Finding that raw coin that has the ability to grade a 67. Especially if you spent less than Gem money for it. Good luck on the grade. A 67 would definitely be a tough one to sell. Even though it has eye appeal. It doesn't seem to fit your registry.
Personally if it was me, I would probably put it in my registry at a MS-66+ or MS-67, due to the connection that forms from finding it raw, and it would still be graded higher than the current MS-66 regardless. It is a really nice coin.
I've seen your registry set. IMO even if it comes back MS 67 I think you should keep the toned MS66 as it does fit better in the set.
The 3rd coin looks better than any that you have posted as far as marks and strike. The only question I have from these photos is about luster and since I know you and how well you know your nickels, the surfaces are great and the 67 grade would not surprise me.
