Severus II was always the emperor who long alluded me to acquire cheaply unless I wanted the smaller sizes. One finally popped up on Vcoins and I was quick to pounce on it. When I was looking up the info for the coin, I found it's a scarcer type & this exact coin was an Ex. CNG item along from some collector past, Gordon s. Perry. Not sure who that is. I got this for HALF of what it went for on CNG in 2008. This was also sent to Wildwinds for publishing. Any info on who Gordon s. Perry would be helpful. Severus II (305 - 307 A.D.) Æ Follis O:SEVERVS NOB C, Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right. R: GENIO POP-VLI ROMANI, Genius standing left, holding patera and cornucopiae; altar left, star right: PLC in exeergue. Lugdunum (Lyon) mint 8.83g 39mm RIC VI 193 Ex CNG Electric Auction, Lot 372, 1/10/2008 Ex. Gordon s. Perry Collection
Great new coin! Though I'm afraid the id on the reverse is off. Genius is clearly playing frolf (frisbee golf)! Seriously though, cool coin. I really dig the green freckles. Reminds me that I need to upgrade this ol dog: Severus II 306-307 CEÆ Follis. Nicomedia, A.D. 306/7. Laureate head of Severus II right. Rv. Nude Genius standing left, holding patera and cornucopiae; SMNA. RIC -, but cf. 48-9.
Just got this update from Dane of Wildwinds about my Severus II Gotta appreciate the help & time & I didn't even ask for it. Pretty cool.
That's indeed a very neat coin! Also, glad to hear you got it for a good price. When I assembled a "set" of tetrarchy folles two years ago, I decided to go for examples with as much remaining silvering as possible. Looking at coins like yours makes me doubt whether this was the wisest choice. As the Severus II follis below illustrates, it often seem to come down to a trade-off between silvering and sharpness. (Yes, I know I have shown this coin before, but it seems to fit in here so well...) Severus II, Roman Empire, AE silvered Follis, 305–306 AD, Heraclea mint.
