Picked up this 1877-S Seated Liberty half dollar with an unknown error. Weight is 11.1g. Weak details in the thinned areas, sharper details elsewhere. Any ideas? If I were to guess I’d go with an after strike lamination loss, equally on both sides.. or a before strike loss that resulted in an equal weak strike on both sides. Either way I’d expect to see an edge where the lam tore off. Matching strike through wouldn’t be possible if these were struck in a verticals press?
Those holes on the reverse appears to be damage. IDK what that shelf like thing is on the obverse. Someone will know very soon.
Damaged and struck through if the image were posted larger better responses to what may have caused the issues.
Hi Imho, is it possible that the planchet itself had a depression in those areas first before it was struck? Would it be a Possible Planchet flaw because the average weight is 12.5g?
It's a shame it isn't in better condition but I'm thinking struck thru cloth or something soft but able to leave the line that runs through. There also some worn medal near the rim large images would help determine.
Yes that is also a thought....but the transfer of the image seems more struck though...again better images.
Never had anyone tell me this was an issue.. Do they not render in full resolution when you click them? I’ve always had issues with the full pasted images screwing up the overall page size. If that’s better for you all I’ll definitely do it that way.
It's not that your images were bad just way to much trouble to enlarge and jump back and forth to see diagnostic points or items on the specmen. @Fred Weinberg
Now I can scroll down and see your images better plus I can adjust the size zooming in an out. Question the last image did you try an over lay?
