What should I look for in a box of old coins?

i found a box of coins cleaning out my dad’s things. He unfortunately passed away 10 years ago so I can’t ask him about it. The coins all range in dates 2 going way back to the 1600s. One was a Qing dynasty coin from the 1600s and another was a 1642 Denmark 8 skiling. Besides those he had a bunch of American coins all ranging in dates 1800s-2005 in all denominations of coins. I know nothing at all about coin collecting. It only sparked my interest finding this box. None of them were certified. from what I’ve gathered so far he saved some errors. Some have noticeable toning things going on. It’s a lot of them to look through. any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Post photos in the correct forum and you'll get answers. Start a new thread for each or group a few like coins together.

if you look at the forums

you'll see these 3 sections which will probably fit most of them for posting.

You'll probably be best to post one individual coin at a time, the Front and Back.

Usually when ppl post a picture of 15 coins all we see is a picture of 15 coins and we can't see any specifics/details about it. Unless after several posts it all ends up just being stored pocket /loose change.

Thank you for all the information. I agree posting to many in one pic it can get lost in translation if I have a good one. Some are in great condition but yet I don’t really know what I’m looking for. I have probably a few thousand coins to look through so it’s a bit intimidating. I’m going to start looking into the forums. Thank you for the links

For the US coins, this is a book you really need. It will be a big help. It cost about $10 or $15.

Handle the coins carefully, only touching the edges. Don't try to clean them!

You're welcome. It's easy to do. You will get much better responses from members as you post to different forums and not everyone has access to the general discussion forum.
