Cool little story today. https://www.foxnews.com/science/draculas-cannonballs-from-battle-found I was more interested in the coins pictured (not mentioned in article). Curious if they were issued by Vlad (I understand none were ever confirmed minted by Vlad III), his Grandfather, or just random found coins with the cannon balls. I have not gone out to see if there are any other articles on this. I have been looking for Vlad or his Grandfather's coins. Not captured any yet. Here are a couple Ottoman coins. Yeah, Vlad hated those guys. Cannons may had been same / similar as the ones that took Constantinople... Ottoman Empire Suleiman the Magnificent 1520-1566 AV Sultani CE Constantinople mint 1520 19mm 3.5g Ottoman Turks Sultan Mahmed II 1451-1481 took Constantinople (using CANNONS) in 1453 Serez mint AR 1.2g
Neat stuff & thanks for the article link. I am a fan of all things Vampire, except twilight *shudders* .
kool Brian..yeah i don't know that Vlad had any coins minted(i've not found any yet either)...i recently bought a coin minted in Transylvania of Joseph ll. (one on the right, Vlad was in cahoots with the Habsburgs, they even had him put in prison for a time ><)
Articles I have read in years past have said Vlad never minted his own coins. His grandfathers are the ones to get. There is this: https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=247640
Hi, there is no definite proof that Vlad III Dracula minted coins, but his father, Vlad II Dracul did mint bani during the 1440s. There is also a hypothesis by Romanian numismatist O. Iliescu that Vlad III did actually mint during his main reign 1456-1462 a series of ducati and one of bani. Vlad II Dracul coinage can be seen here Vlad III Dracula hypothetic coinage can be seen here
Very cool! Thanks for sharing. I have, possibly, coins of both grandfather's (my understanding is that there is only around 30ish known of his dad and 2 that may be of Vlad himself). This first one is certainly Vlad Sepis (Dracula's) grandpa: Wallachia Mircea cel Bătrân, 1386-1418 ss Ducat 1386-1418 Romania Alexandru cel bun (Alexander the Good) Half gos type 4. 11.7 mm diameter, ? g, copper or billon Obverse Moldavian coat of arms: urus head bearing a five ray star between its horns, the uneven ray pointing down, waning crescent at left and five petal rose at right, the odd petal pointing down (heraldic positioning Reverse shield split vertically; three bars at right and five fleurs-de-lis at left arranged 2-2-1 (heraldic positioning); over the shield the Moldavian urus having at heraldic left a waning crescent (in the missing portion of the coin a five petal rose); partially visible outer pearl circle. Here is one of my coins of Mircea the Elder. Vlad's brother Radu, was quite handsome and was taken by Mehmed II (who conquered Constantinople in 1453) for his harem which traditionally contained a few pretty boys in addition to women. Radu was not happy with the sultan's advances and climbed a pear tree where he through pears at him. The story goes that he was so handsome Mehmet forgave him. Mehmed II was 21 when he conquered Constantinople which begins what we call the modern period. Vlad's atrocities are far worse than most imagine and I prefer not to share all of them. When Mehmet came to Eastern Europe from Constantinople to put Mehmed in line he and his troops encountered his own Turkish officials in their official vestments impaled along the way, some still not yet dead.
