Pretty good write-up. Tells it like it is now compared to what it could/should have been... Thanks. :)

No to MLK on a coin.
I want to see ALL the dead people off of our coinage.
Bring back Lady Liberty and soaring eagles.
Dead people can have their stage on paper currency.
    ;)

LBJ did more for civil rights than MLK ever did, and this is not the forum for this discussion. There are Reagan dimes on Ebay right this minute if you look.....they are private mint issues and I have one

Yes, Nancy Reagan is against it

Come on one of them has to be first. If King had been first the feminists would upset, and with SBA first the Black right s activists are upset. So no matter which you chose someone was going to be unhappy. Well las t I looked there were more women than there were blacks so you make the larger group happier first.

Is the Mint racist? Well considering the Mint doesn't make the decision as to who is on the coin I think you owe them an apology for your accusation, and maybe you should ask if the Congress is racist? And I think you would be on shaky grounds there as well since there have been several coin issues with themes dedicated to blacks Booker T Washington, Washington-Carver, Black patriots, Jackie Robinson, and Little Rock.

As I said I have no objection to a King coin (even though he had skeletons in his closet as well) but I would rather it be on a commemorative coin. (And I would like to see it as a circulating commemorative) but I would really like to get all the real people off the regular coins. Putting real people on regular coins creates all kinds of political headaches when you want to make changes. If they were on a circulating commemorative it would be created for a set period and there would be no "fallout" when it's time period ended and its production ceased.

I think the quarter would be a good choice for the commemorative coin and it would be produced along with whatever the regular design was, one commem design per year, striking 300 million or so of them and mix them in the bags with the regular coins. It would make hoarding more difficult, disburse them well, and they would be common enough that people could find them i chnge for their collections. Yes, I think a King quarter in 2018 would be a good idea.

MLK is viewed as so important because he was killed. Had he still be alive today would he have his own holiday named after him?

I say NO to a coin, but I do thank him for the holiday :) <flame suit on>

I agree. The general public is now accustomed to the constantly changing designs on the quarter and now the dollar. Most probably wouldn't even notice the change and those that do would welcome the yearly redesign. With the success of the statehood quarters this would create a means of keeping the public interested in circulating coins and continue to provide a constant flow of affordable, pocket change collectibles.

I agree that one or the other had to be first, but Anthony was on the coins in 1976, and Luther hasn't been on yet. If you're going to say that Anthony was long dead when she was commemerated, that didn't stop them putting JFK on the coins right away.

Isn't it just unfair that there is no Afro-American on the circulations ?

The time will come for M.L.K., but for now there are more important things that our congress has to focus on, like the economy!

I agree with Jerome. I would love to see him on a true circulating coin...every person in our history has so called skeletons...its what he did for america and americans that is important, he is a big part of our history like the rest of them.

Please...lets not go back to putting libertas on every coin in every possible way, an unoriginal concept borrowed from the French, who borrowed it from the Romans, because we didnt have anything better. Thats just plain boring...maybe leave that to a retro commemerative instead. Liberty is far from a unique american coin concept, its just the same old that has been done by so many others...if you want to get retro...indian and buffalo for the unique american coin look...or great americans...like MLK.

Disagree, I would LOVE to get people (presidents) off of coins and put back liberty.

Isnt it just unfair that there are no Hispanic-Americans on coins?
Isnt it just unfair that there are no Asian-Americans on coins?
Isnt it just unfair that there are no homosexuals on coins?
Isnt it just unfair that there are no Jewish people on coins?
