I just pulled this out of a bank roll...i dont know much about nickels...but,i do know that the older jefferson coins with prominent steps are sought after, and the mid 50s coins are known for weak strikes. With that being said...is this coin worth grading? Is it worth anything as is? Are these even close to being full steps? What grade does this look like going by the pictures i provided? Any info is greatly appreciated, cheers.
It is an extremely common coin, and that one is only AU-ish, so no, it is not worth much more than face value monetarily, and as a result, it is certainly not worth spending $30-40-ish to slab. That being said, it is uncommonly nice for a circulation find, and worth a smile. Nice find, regardless of the value.
Dang,i saw the steps and rly thought i had something, thats quite disapointing, lol. Thanks for the info @lordmarcovan
I really dunno about the steps. It's kind of a moot point, really. In all grades up to AU58 - in other words, every circulated grade (and this is a lightly circulated coin), Numismedia puts the value of a 1957-D nickel at $0.06, which is their default minimum. Even in most Mint State grades, it would not be worth the cost of grading. They struck nearly 137 million of them. Sorry, no big score this time. But as a circulation find, it is still cool, and worthy of a smile, like I said.
I should add that I do keep all the pre-1960 Jeffersons I find in change, even though the late-'50s coins really aren't worth any premium in circulated condition. They're just fun to find, is all.
i keep all pre '60 nickels also, i have a few nickel folders where i stash the nicer ones, yours is a good one for a folder..
It is my understanding that TPG will only assign FS (Full Steps) to coins that grade high MS, so it wouldn't even qualify.
As others have stated, Jefferson Nickels are really only collectible in gem grade or above. The PCGS Price Guide for a 1957-D MS65 FS is $100, but that falls to $22 in MS64 FS. In the realm of CRH, the only real way to score with Jefferson Nickels is to find a variety coin.
Exactly. Somewhere I have a nickel folder I was filling just from circulation finds. No buying stuff to fill the holes. Just stuff I found "in the wild".
yup, i have a stack of coin folders filled with coins i've picked out of circulation, bought coins would be for the dansco or whitman albums...
Nice coin. Nickels are so common you really have to have a just about perfect to be of any true value. Your almost there
Full steps coin must be MS to qualify. Difficult to pull an old Jefferson out of a roll that is even AU.
