Hoard of Viking coins seized during police raid could ‘change British history’ (Original article title from The Independent) https://www.independent.co.uk/news/...-durham-police-alfred-the-great-a8939201.html Apparently, they date from the time of Alfred the Great. Thoughts?
Fascinating read. Thanks so much for posting! Wonderful, I already needed an Alfred the great. Now I need a Ceowolf too!
If you're Brit, you do. Different mind set in that neck of the woods. Yanks would have run off with it.......
Their find laws are VERY restrictive about finds and whether or not you should have ever even looked.
I understand about the archaeological looting, etc. But why is the coroner the authority that you go to with this?
Because in the United Kingdom the coroner's office is authorized by statute to hold inquests into treasures discovered in the country. There is now a special office of "treasure coroner" ever since the passage of the Coroners and Justice Act of 2009. This office has the authority to investigate treasure finds, assess the value, and coordinate payout to discoverer and land owner in the event of a sale to local authorities, and distribute the treasure or portion of the treasure find back to the discoverer and landowner in the event any municipality or museum does not want to purchase part of the treasure find. So yeah, some coroners investigate deaths, and others just sit there studying and investigating coin hoards, jewelry, and treasures to determine their value and national importance. I know which kind of coroner I'd want to be.
