Since ussaty's post will probably be edited here the auction again. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=250233100094&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT&ih=015 Good call dude. It does look cleaned to me. You'll probably do better with it in the holder as Cloudsweeper99 originally pointed out. There was an ebay seller that was buying slabbed coins with problems, breaking them out and then selling them as no problem coins. A certain CT member hounded that guy to death.
There was a charachter who used to buy ANACS problem coins, and then crack them out and sell raw. He used this MO to intentionally deceive and steal many a folks money, and we chased him out of 3 different Ebay id's and have not seen him in a while. Honesty is the best policy, no need to repeat that here, but get on the bad side of this and other forums by cracking problems and selling raw, and it can get pretty heated and pretty nasty. Besides, that old Seated coin is perfectly acceptable being cleaned anyways, most all of them are, unfortunalty only some get flagged as such. Good call, and nice coin too !!
Cleaned really only gets mentioned if its done wrong. Thats one thing I have noticed with slabbed coins. That being said, I beleive its something like 80% of all coins not slabbed have been cleaned at some point. The older they are the more likly as cleaning coins many years ago was considered the other way around way back a long time ago. With that being said. I beleive the reason cleaning coins became the big NO DO thing. Is because so many coins where being cleaned incorectly. As AZ mentioned. Some coins are perfectly acceptable being cleaned for that same reason I stated above. You will notice that almost every coin you see over 150 years old has been cleaned. Reason: Peoples idea of collecting coins was very different from todays thought on the hobby. Im glab you made the choice to keep it in its slab. For that I hope you get a good dollar amount for it.
Its too bad that someone thought they had to clean a beautiful coin like that. The coin has very nice detail.
I think I've seen that coin before, not sure though. Atleast one similiar. Weird. Anyways, ditto what everyone else said. Phoenix
I have seen many coins with problems on eBay that have been graded by ANACS as "EF-45 Details", "AU-50 Cleaned", etc. Very often (maybe even more often than not) the bidders seem to ignore the problem description and bid the grade noted (i.e., they bid EF-45 money or more for that "EF-45 Details" coin. So I don't think you have to worry about losing much on this coin by being honest about its description.
I checked out the ebay listing and the coin is very nice. Is the square on the reverse the problem? Removal of old tape or a sticker perhaps? I had faith in you. You made the right ( read only) choice. Bravo!
w/o intending to be rude.....if you know its cleaned say so. there is no moral dilemma. treat people as you want to be treated. do you want someone to sell you a coin when they know its been cleaned and so they break it out of a slab and sell it raw so maybe it will slip by undetected????? if we would all just treat each other like we would want to be treated, many issues could certainly be resolved i am not trying to be a wank, but i detest scammers or any little white lies to get over on people. i am sick and tired of collectors getting burned for inexperience. always do the right thing!!! " YOU CAN JUDGE THE CHARACTER OF AN INDIVIDUAL BY HOW THEY TREAT THOSE WHO CAN DO NOTHING TO, OR FOR THEM" ..one of my favorite quotes. i do not intend to be rude or insulting, but i have little tact......steve
Do YOU think it has been cleaned? If so go ahead and sell it in the slab. If you honestly don't think it has been cleaned then I see no problem with cracking it out. Some have said thet you KNOW it was cleaned because ANACS said cleaned on the slab. Weel that is an OPINION. Iit is possible for you to have a different OPINION. And the future buyer will have his own opinion. What is printed on slab is not written in stone or the "Word of God"
Come on. you can still bits of Brillo on the obverse. Now thats cleaned! No really. By that logic; if you habd a slabbed coined that was graded MS68 and you thought the grade was going to be lower, would you sell it for the lower grade?
