This comes up regularly here. If you put "Photograph" or "Photography" in the Search box and limit it to "Search titles only" you will find very many discussions and more than a few great ones. One set-up that I used had the coin in a flat gray box with a 60-watt incandescent lamp 20 inches away and with a plain glass sheet lifted up at 45 degrees between the lamp and the coin. But, right now, I just use my iPhone. I did buy a 20x attachment for the phone and I do have a 100x digital microscope. Nice as they are for bug wings and all that, for me, coins need to be seen the way you see them. The challenge with photography is to be as good as the human eye.
