Coin has lines on obverse side. Beautiful detail on reverse side. Also clad seems off? New to all this. Open to advice and opinions. Thank you
Interesting color off, but I think it's just a circulated coin with environmental damage, after leaving the Mint. Not a mint error, imho. Let's hear what others say.
The fact that these lines can be seen going across the bust makes me think that they are from the roller machines used to roll out the metal stock to the proper thickness. This means that they are on the planchet prior to the strike. These striations are usually obliterated by the pressure on accurately spaced dies. However, if the dies were too far apart or if the pressure wasn't sufficient enough then the metal isn't pushed into the highest points of the coin leaving the striations intact. I think the would be called "Planchet Striations". I agree with environmental discoloration. Were it missing clad, weight would be less than normal. Quarter weight missing one clad layer = 4.71 g +/- 0.347 g; missing two clad layers = 3.75 g +/- .467 g.
Stained on the reverse, roller lines (roller stains) on the obverse. The latter is an error that traces back to the rolling mill. Value is negligible.
