I found this penny many moons ago, it was in a sorry state, bent and blackened by fire. Luckily for me I knew a man who was an expert at returning coins and artefacts back into something resembling their original state. What has never been identified is the mint. I know a lot of the inscription is missing, but what remains looks like the letters ELIG. Does anyone agree ? Or am I seeing things as usual! Thanks for looking ! reverse.JPG obverse.JPG obverse.JPG

I see what could be "ELIG" on the top right side of the coin. I know nothing about these coins, but that is really cool looking!

It’s from the mint of Wallingford (PELIG). The moneyer is probably Alfric or Edric based on length of name and the space available - but hard to tell which from the photo (I can see RIC M in the lower left quadrant). The other moneyer ending RIC known for this type is Leofric but probably too many letters. BTW, the photo needs to be rotated 90 degrees anti-clockwise so that the cross at the start of the reverse legend is at 12.00

Thanks very much for all this information. That's great! It can now be properly indexed after 20 years !
