Who says nobody is honest any more? Matthew Rodgers of Novato, CA found an ammunition box hidden in his attic. When he opened the ammo box he found it held $2,000 worth of US silver coins - and a note from the former homeowner (now deceased) to his children. Mr. Rodgers tracked down the former homeowner's kids, returned the coins to them and refused a reward.

The former homeowner, who died 14 years ago, left numerous messages and notes to his family saying that he had the coins hidden in a safe place but they never found them. (The ammo box was hidden under attic insulation and a sheet of drywall.)

    Kudos to Matthew Rodgers!

this goes beyond honest. He could have "honestly" justified that when he bought the house he bought any contents within. What he did wasn't just honest it was "the right thing to do" which is rare in todays society.

Thanks for posting that Hobo. Mr. Rodgers must truly be an exceptional person. I'm sure 9 out of 10 people would have kept the box.

That is amazing considering the economy, the average person's honesty and no real necessity to do the right thing. Just a great person I guess.

I'll admit, I would have accepted the reward, but I would have also made sure they knew the real value and how to go about selling or preserving them. This is true example of integrity.

That is great news for once. It gives true collectors a good name/image. Believe I'd have done the same thing too.

I would have done the same thing as this guy (except maybe ask for small token reward of one silver coin just as memory of the experience - nothing worth much though) but I would have gone through them all and maybe put some of the most valuable coins in air-tites if they were not already protected. They could have done what they wanted after I gave them to them but I would have liked to protect the ones that needed it.

It's a great story - thanks for sharing!

You know - the more I think about it - it would just be weird to go through them - I wouldn't want them to think I separated the best ones and kept them. I would just turn them over as I found them!
