Too civilized in this area........Easter Sunday on the move, and the black folks were having a time of it. I loved what was happening but I could'd park the rig......
Howdy Manda - is this the one you mean ? https://www.whitman.com/store/Inven...ook-of-US-Type-Coins---2nd-Edition+0794822835 If so that's a good choice to start out with. As for this - Well, that kinda depends on you more than anything else, where your interest lies. You say you're a new collector so my suggestion would be to start with some general information books first, books that deal with and discuss the basics of coin collecting. Here are 4 choices you can consider - https://www.amazon.com/Coin-Collecting-Beginners-Guide/dp/1545192642 https://www.amazon.com/Quick-Guide-...coding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=VNYWWBD5NBCBE3N3ZZ4Z https://www.amazon.com/Coin-Collect...coding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=VNYWWBD5NBCBE3N3ZZ4Z https://www.amazon.com/Beginners-Guide-Collecting-James-MacKay/dp/1572152478 I don't know if any or all of those will suit your needs and wants, but as the old saying goes ya gotta start someplace so ya might as well start at the beginning. Once ya get that under your belt, then you'll have a better idea of the direction you wish to follow.
Thank you so much all! Yes, I have the David Bowers US Type coins guide, and I have ordered the John Freeman "Quick Guide", and I will look for one of the deluxe copies of the Red Book from a year or two back. Thanks folks!
If you're interested in a type collection, I recommend Pleasure & Profit: 100 Lessons for Building and Selling a Collection of Rare Coins by Robert Shippee. You can buy a good used first edition on Amazon for about $10. The collection referenced by the title is a type collection. Shippee is (or was) a banker, so there's lots of advice on the economics of buying and selling coins. The book is entertaining too. Cal
Please pick up a copy of, "THE ART AND SCIENCE OF GRADING COINS". By Jason Poe. Study this book it will be a great help, once you grasp the material! Wellcome and good hunting!
Yes, excellent book. You may also want to buy a grading guide, e.g. there’s one written by James Halperin. Hardcover: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0026QUQOG/ref=tmm_hrd_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=&sr= Online version: http://www.coingrading.com/intro1.html
Those are pretty standard references, and ones that I would recommend. For pricing I would see if a dealer has an old greysheet he would let you have, and I also recommend downloading PCGS CoinFacts. PCGS PhotoGrade would help you with grading, as well as the ANA official grading standards. Here is a guide to help you detect improperly cleaned coins: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/how-to-detect-cleaned-coins.327555/ Here is a guide to help you detect counterfeits: http://brna.org/2019/05/28/modern-chinese-counterfeits-of-united-states-coins/ If you can go to shows, go. There are lots of coins to look at, and any dealer having a slow day would likely be happy to answer any questions you have. Reading the books and looking at pictures are no substitute to seeing the real things in person. And, lastly, have fun! This book by my good friend Bill Fivaz offers many helpful tips for building a collection which you will enjoy for years to come. https://www.amazon.com/Helpful-Hints-Enjoying-Coin-Collecting/dp/B001L10XTU
