Hello hello! I'm quite a new member here, and like many new collectors I have questions. My first one concerns books. I know the old adage about buying the book first, and I plan to do just that. However... Which book(s)? I hope to work on a US type set, at least from the mid 19th century to perhaps the end of silver coinage for now. No gold, ill go slow. Now, I'm a collector of modest means, so ill be into low ms grades at best, and won't snub lower coins if they're pleasing and/or the price is fair. I've ordered a copy of the Type Collector's Guide from the red book series, and will pick up the 2020 Red Book itself next time I'm by the coin shop in town here. But besides these... What would you recommend? Should I look for more in depth books which perhaps focus more on a type? Or at the rather low end coins ill be seeking out, are such specific books going to be unhelpful? Thanks much, Manda
Consider looking in your local public or university library. It is unlikely they have much up-to-date, but they will be free to borrow and might give you some ideas.
Web sites and Google anything that strikes your fancy..... free information at your finger tips. Make sure you book mark them....for future use. Books are great as I write this post to my left no less than 34 books sit within my reach up in my office at least another 30 to 40 texts. Some get quite pricy some I've paid $125 for one catalog years ago even out of date it still provides tons of data. Pick a series Google it see what pops up...if you like pm me and I'll give you a list of sights to look at....but let me know your interest to narrow down the sites.
Quite right about 'pricey', Paddy. When you 'specialize' the references tend to be expensive........ https://www.amazon.com/Encyclopedia-Commemorative-Anthony-Swiatek-2012-05-15/dp/B01FGNOFCY I paid quite a few shekels less a few years ago.......
Yeah but you and I been doing this for a few decades.....not saying how few..... These youngsters can't afford ,but what they have ,and we didn't is the net. But I'm still buying books....as well giving them to YN's. My gold reference was $150.00 purchased it about 20 years ago...it has paid for its self many times over. I'm always interested in finding more references especially the ones out of print. I'm still in the hunt for a half dime book by L&M.
The Mega-Red Book is a great introductory book for a beginner in U.S. coins. It's encyclopedic in style and you can often find last year's edition for sale cheap. You can get more specialized books once you decide what you're interested in.
Also check book outlets Olies here sells all sorts of books, depending on location you can find some good deals
Where the devil did I see that name? I think I was watching 'figure skating' with the wife back in February.........it was advertised on the boards. I thought it was a 'joke'..........
No they are outlets who buy bulk items and sell for cheap prices. They sell everything I recall a member who was buying the big red book for like $5 A pop of course last year's copy, but never the less cheap.
And Walmart on the other side.....heading west. No blasted parking. Had to park in the back of the building with the RV. Walmart must have called the cops because a young officer showed up. Explained that I was only there for a few minuets.......He understood.
180 feet from the deck to the river....it is pretty high...you ever seen the 2 bay bridges? And actually could come down 301 on the shore cross the bay hit rt 50 to 495 to 95.
Next time contact me I'll give you my number in pm I'll give you good directions to other areas you can lay over.
