RR - L Regulus Bestiarii 3416.jpg ROMAN REPUBLIC
AR Denarius. 3.43g, 18.5mm. Rome mint, 42 BC. L. Livineius Regulus, moneyer. Crawford 494/30; RBW 1735; Sydenham 1112. O: Bare head of the praetor L. Livineius Regulus to right. R:L•REGVLVS, bestiarius standing left, spearing lion; behind, another bestiarius standing right, spearing panther; to left, wounded bear sitting right.
Notes: The venatio was a staged hunt where gladiators called bestiarii would kill a variety of wild beasts for the entertainment of the spectators. This venatio depicted on this coin possibly commemorates the five-day venatio which was part of the extravagant games held by Julius Caesar in 45 BC at the Circus Maximus of Rome. Caesar had 400 lions imported from North Africa and Syria, and also introduced bears and giraffes to the hunt for the first time.

@Ryro - I NEED to know how to do that animation.... awesome!!

Well I have found 2 attributions of this little Greek coin... one says Athena.. another Apollo.. so maybe I'll get an answer here...

    GreekMyrina_MERGE.jpg

Myrina, Aeolis. AE 17mm. Laureate head of Apollo right / MY-ΡI, decorated amphora; lyre right.
**second attribution I found states Athena as the OBV....

Next coin showing Amphora.... and I will be really disappointed if @Justin Lee does not post an amplifier..
