I wish more ANA members would get involved in their organization. Most are very passive members and the closest they come to becoming involved is complaining. Recently I sent a letter to the ANA Consumer Advocate where I made suggestions for a new program where ANA members can educate the public (especially elderly) about common coin scams. I also offered my time to achieve this goal. I have not received a response yet. I live only 6 miles from ANA headquarters so I think I will drop by sometime and discuss this with her face to face.
Things can be done. All it takes is effort. Of course the last time I started talking like this I talked myself right into something I wish hadn't come to pass now that it has. But hey, hindsight is 20/20. The point is though, it can be done if people are willing to do the necessary work. And you keep quiet Speedy - lighting is not gonna strike twice.
One of the big problems I see is that this forces some change in each of the TPGs. That means that some old slabs are now misgraded, and not for the normal reasons. What to do in cases where a TPG's standard changed ? For example, let's say you're holding an old slab NGC MS63, which, by the new standards, is an MS64. It seems there would have to be a way to get the coin regraded to new standards on the cheap a la reholdering, so that everything evens out. If the new standards were stricter*, no one would want to downgrade the slab. This would lead to ENORMOUS confusion about value of "old slab / new slab". Chaos. The more I think about it, I'm concerned the remedy is worse than the disease... All of which begs the question - how different are the standards for NGC vs PCGS ? I'm sure it varies issue by issue. * for a given TPG / issue / grade
For one....there are far too many " koolaide drinkers" who worship HRH as a "rockstar", the guy actually has groupies....... The CAC sticker program is designed to identify the "choice for the grade" coins, and as CaveTroll has pointed out, it has sort of leveled the field to an extent. I for one don't play the slab game hardcore, I take and leave em all the time, coin at a time, let situation dictate. I have seen mistakes in all 4 of the "big 4", and if ANACS and ICG don't get it together quick, it will be the big 2 real soon. As much as I hate, and I mean HATE to admit it, that freakin PCGS slab coin sells for more.
Simple. Change the slabs so that they look nothing like the old ones. It's like demonetizing money. The market simply refuses to pay for anything in an old holder or treats it as ungraded. I neither want them to tighten nor loosen the standards, I want them to standardize the standards, although it would be nice to get the grading right if we're gonna change the whole system anyways. Your comment about the slabs being misgraded for the wrong reasons makes me think, if we know it's misgraded, then we are already ahead of the whole slab idea.
