Hello Everyone - beginner here. I just bought a bag of 2019 BU Kennedy Half Dollars from the US Mint. Should I leave them in the sealed bag they came in or is it better to have them graded and slabbed. I originally thought I'd buy them and put them away for my kids and grand kids but then I thought they might be worth more when I pass them along if I have them graded and slabbed. I haven't even opened the bag to look at them since I thought it might diminish the value if I do. Just wasn't sure. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
At roughly $30+ a coin to grade, do you think you would get a decent ROI on slabbing? Personally, I think not.
Yeah go ahead and pay for them to be graded and slabbed, what's the odds of any of these pocket change coins being different to the one that was struck just before it. The TPG feed on the gullible.
Ya want it 'slabbed', buy it 'slabbed'. Just try'in to save you some money. Do you possess the experience to properly grade coins? Do you trust your judgement? Slabbing stuff is expensive. Got's the deep pockets? Don't drink the Kool Aid.......
Passing on coins to the next generation is an admiral goal. I have have been a lifetime collector and have many I will be passing on. One of my personal treasures are two 1964 halves my grandmother set aside for me. She wrapped them in wax paper. To this day they still reside in that waxed paper. Couple of things. A slabbed coin is meaningful to a collector. Not so much to a non-collector. You will spend $30.00-$50.00 per coin having them slabbed. While it will protect your coin for posterity, the slab will not add value to the coin..... However I do believe that slabbing family heirloom coins is a worthwhile goal. And as an aside, you can get your own slabs from numismatic sources on the web and slab them yourself for pocket change.
To politely answer your question the answer is no. There needs to be an added value to the coin gained by grading or certification before it becomes justified, IOW just because it’s slabbed doesn’t make it worth more simply by virtue of that fact.
The chances of your finding a coin good and clean enough to be slabbed is almost nill. They have been banging against each other for sometime now. The cost of grading will be costly. I would only grade the best of the lot and only if you plan to give them out to family members for a keepsake. Otherwise it's just not worth the cost. Welcome to CT.
Grading moderns and determining when slabbing is worthwhile is a much tougher game than with classic coins. Keep these as they are and just put them away in a sealed container if you want to hold on to them.
