Odd mark on 1977 Lincoln

  1. I found this coin roll hunting and I have to say I cannot figure out what exactly happened here. Is this something that one of you wise coin experts have see or can explain? I don’t understand how it has a shiny surface under what looks like a peeled back covering. Thanks ahead of time.

Just how deep is that? You photo makes it look like a canyon but it has the E clearly where is should be. I suspect it's a very shallow lamination peel that detached. The metal under the missing piece would be shiny if this happened recently as the copper has not been exposed to air. The rest of the coin has so it has toned dark which is normal.

  4. It is pretty shallow. I didn’t realize there was a laminate layer. Makes sense. Thank you Collecting Nut

You're welcome. I don't know if I'm correct or not as I'm looking at a photo but it sounds plausible to me. There isn't a laminate layer. When a piece of the coin peels off it's a lamination error. A piece of the coin can peel away but still be attached. That's a retained lamination. I'll let you research those terms further. It's good learning.
