As requested here are a couple of closer shots of the 1794 and 1798 cent. The 94 is just about worn smooth especially on the reverse, P01-AG I’m thinking. Would love an opinion on the surfaces of the 98, looks like some kind of cleaning maybe?
Yeah, your 1798 has some rather scrubby surfaces, but as far as "problem" coins and early large cents go, it's not that bad-looking. Has some decent details. Hey, these are fun in any sort of condition. And I've seen them in every conceivable condition from worn-out slug on up. Check out these two that my local detecting buddy found. Both are in remarkably good states of preservation for a dug 1798 cent, both are of the Sheldon-166 variety with its telltale reverse die break, and they were dug on different sites. For some reason, several S-166's have been found around here. (Not shown is the only Draped Bust cent *I* have dug personally- its a massively-corroded slug, barely identifiable.)
That's actually the first side of my Dansco. Altogether it's filled with 58 coins, thus 18 missing. @gbandy We are on the right way
Very nice! Really a great collection. Memories with your grandfather--more valuable than the coins themselves ( though in this case, you DO have have an intrinsic value.) We have a grandson born in 2012, and granddaughter born in 2015. They both know I collect coins. I give the boy ATB quarters I find and he fills his album--he reads up on the history of each quarter. He also knows to wash the "stickies" off of his hands before touching the coins, and to hold the coin by the edge. The girl is not interested, yet. I hope they both become collectors in their own right. I buy the proof ATB sets for both of them, as well as the Uncirculated Mint set each year since their birth.
I agree with the Oregon Trail--that is what I have in my 7070 Album. The Fraser husband-wife team have created a beautiful coin.
Whether they do become collectors or not, I’m sure they will always value the time and enthusiasm you’ve invested in sharing your interests with them. I still have the 1984 mint set (my birth year) that my grandpa picked up for me at a coin show he took me too. Good memories!
Thank you for the kind words. 1984 is a good year. And I am guessing you still collect, since you are Coin Talk today. Nice!
Thanks man! It was more than I budgeted, but it’s really nice, I did not get a great picture of the surfaces. It’s really pretty in hand.
Yeah, I can see the dark grey obverse surfaces, and hints of blue toning on the reverse. Looks quite attractive.
In general, pages like this one that show as "out of stock" at danscoalbumstore.com aren't currently in print, and you'll have to either look on the secondary market or wait for the next run to be made. There is an album that includes the gold page currently on eBay.
I found some off brand gold pages and am using them until I find dansco gold pages. They are out of stock at every supplier that I have contacted. Doubtless there are dealers with quantities who will eventually start selling them on ebay.
