I am glad to see bicentennial coins getting some attention. They were exciting when they were released. That first half has been horribly abused. I would guess it may have had an unfortunate meeting with a lawn mower or something.

Only joking around but that half is a Mint error. After it was minted it went through the coin press. The press was obviously over tightened and it smashed the half. I heard that the Mint was trying this as a new process. They wanted to get 25 halves into a roll instead of the standard twenty in order to cut costs. Luckily for all that project was abandoned.

You said you are new to this so please don't take the above seriously. That half is highly damaged. If you stick around you'll understand my sarcasm and humor as it's a wonder this wasn't posted in the error or what's it worth forum.

    Welcome to CT. :)

Oh please don't. You posted this in the correct forum but so many new members find a coin like this. They think it's an error and they struck it rich. Theybpist an the errorless what's it worth forum and argue with us when we tell them it's damaged.

I'm really not looking for money, just enjoyment really. recently my nephew found a silver 1946 nickel. he realized the color was way different then his others. so he had his parents drop it off at a jewelers and had it tested. i know Thomas, i thought the same thing when i seen it. lol!

The first coin is damaged. You probably can't spend it, but you can turn it in at the bank as a mutilated coin and they will give you 50 cents.
As for the 1946 silver nickel, it's highly unlikely.

Welcome to CT. Maintain a sense of humor here. War nice which contain silver (35%) were minted from 1942-1945 and have the large mint mark above Monticello. You should buy a "Red Book" (A Guide Book of United States Coins).

Yea, Welcome to Coin Talk. Where if you work hard at it, try your best and lose some sleep here and there from staying on here too long, doing your research, the coins'll TALK to ya!
You've definitely stumbled into the right Numismatic coin shop, because believe you me, these people have ALL the knowledge and will surely lay some of it on ya.
It's a pretty cool place to be. Pretty exciting, never a dull moment.
    Enjoy

While it is possible for a 1946 to have been minted on a leftover silver war time planchet (without the large mint mark). Again, it's highly unlikely.
