I am always happy to have a little piece of Greek art for a good price. Even though it is out of my 'normal' collection area for Greek coins, it is a nice addition with a cool gorgoneion. Troas, Abydos. AR Obol (Circa 480-450 B.C.) Obverse: ABY Eagle standing left; to right, kantharos/kylix. Reverse: Facing gorgoneion. Reference: SNG Copenhagen 4 var.; Weber 5258. Size: 11mm; 0.69g And along the way I got this interesting coin as well, both the obverse as the reverse attracted me. I like that the sphinx is quite 'complete'. Troas, Gergis. AE coin (Circa 400-241 B.C.) Obverse: Laureate head of the sibyl Herophile facing slightly right. Reverse: ΓEP, Sphinx seated right. Reference: SNG Cop 338; SNG von Aulock 1515. Size: 12mm; 1.57g Please share your coins from Abydos and Gergis. Also, please share your favorite little Greek silver coin!
Very nice lil coin pick-up, Pavlos! This little AR goat is one of my faves in my collection at the moment: Thraco Macedonian Tribes, Uncertain Tribe AR Obol, Struck 480-460 BC Obverse: Male goat kneeling right on groundline. They are fun, aren't they? TROAS KEBREN AR Obol OBVERSE: Archaic head of Apollo left REVERSE: Ram'S head left within an incuse square Struck at Troas, Kebren Circa 450 BC .56g, 7mm Rosen 534; Traité pl. xxxix, 25, SNG Ashmolean 1086 ex. Aegean Numismaics
Tiny Greek coins are the best. I love them and I can't get enough of them. All these coins are sub-13mm. Most are well under 10mm.
