Scott, the coins are nice, just not much value in todays market, I sudgest keeping them, don't take things personal here. coin collectors are a tough crowd.
That statement is entirely false. Not to dissuade a newcomer to collecting...but your coins aren't worth much, if any, more than face value. I suggest you take some time and read up on reputable sites about what constitutes a real error or variety. Also wouldn't hurt to read up on actual values of your coins vs those truly rare coins.
One thing to remember, what someone is asking for a coin may be completely different than what they are actually selling for. There are sites, Etsy for instance, where absolutely ridiculous asking prices can be found.
Yes Etsy is the main site google brings up. And I’ve asked several people how they even got their pricing on what their penny is worth. They say auctioneers, google, researching such coins, and other coin collectors. I personally wouldn’t know so that’s why I asked them and that’s what they told me. Then found this site and figured why not give it a try. I’m sure someone will be able to look at my coins and justify whether it’s an error or is it’s just pocket change. I appreciate everyone’s output in this. It’s been really helpful to me. The rudeness or the fact that someone thinks they are better because they know a little more than me about this certain subject doesn’t bother me. That’s just small minded people not being professional or adultlike about a subject someone is simply asking for advice or their thoughts. No feelings hurt here. I appreciate them as well for being brutally honest.
And this is exactly why I’m on here. To see what my next step is on verifying if a coin is just a coin or if it’s a rare valuable coin. If you would suggest reputable sites, then you should suggest exactly what sites would best help me in getting knowledge about coins and which certain coins to look for. That would greatly be appreciated as well. Thank you.
Thank you. Yeah, I’m not exactly positive on what to look for. I have done some research and tried googling certain coins to try and find the rarity in them. This tough crowd isn’t all that tough. Rude, yes. Doesn’t bother me. Just helps me see that what I’m looking at isn’t what I thought it was. If they would point me in the right direction that would be nice and greatly appreciated. Never know, you may see me at your next coin display with a coin that will blow all them out the water. Darn newbies and their newbie luck lol. Jk. But for real any advice is better then no advice. I will researching and keep everyone updated if I find anything special or something actually interesting to discuss to learn the history of it and what it’s been through.
We can certainly point you at resources, but it will take time, a lot of time, Since you showed Lincoln cents, lets start there. www.coppercoins.com www.lincolncentresource.com and of course the Error Coins forum here on Cointalk has 30,000 threads and over 280,000 posts to look for interesting things you want to know. A hint. When showing coins, indicate what you see that appears abnormal. 98% will be damage and no value, but every so often someone finds something. If someone does find something , believe me someone will tell him he has something, but most often the answer will be no value , OR ALL OF US WOULD BE SO RICH WE would be cruising around in our Maserati !!!!! and not posting here. Jim
@desertgem provided two great websites for Lincoln cents. I would also like to tack on http://varietyvista.com/index.htm - Good site for referencing varieties (DDOs, DDRs, RPMs, OMMs) http://www.error-ref.com/ - Good site for learning about actual mint errors.
I didn't see anything rude in the comments posted. What I did see were common Lincoln cents that are worth face value. You can be like the folks on ETSY and the Boobtube and think that your coins are worth this crazy amount of money. But if you actually took the time to understand why some coins are worth the amount sold for, then you would see exactly what we see in them. Take advantage of the web sites given to you read them and read them again. Get aquainted with terms especially MS Luster strike and eye appeal. These terms are what put one coin above another and give normal everyday coins an extreme value. Don't forget Top Pop. Having a coin that is in the highest grade given can and usually will command a nice premium. Just don't forget that folks on etsy are using the hype that you toob has made to take advantage of new collectors. When really they have no clue what they are doing. They are uneducated at best. Good luck!
Lol. All good. I don’t take everything serious. I do find coins pretty interesting. I have a couple 1964 quarters. Nothing special about them tho besides they’re silver
