Trying to cash in on free coin counting. We're making a purchase over the weekend at one of Coinstars sponsors. Tyring to go through as many coins as these old tired eyes can look through. :kewl:

    *EDIT*
Okay... evidently my post may have caused some confusion and I'm sorry. There's a sale at Circuit City for a replacement hard drive that I need and it ends this Saturday. To avoid paying the 8.9% CoinStar fee, we're going to cash in pennies and purchase a Circuit City e-certificate. So, I've been doing a marathon three box penny search and plan to dump my discards at our local Coinstar tomorrow morning.

    Roll searching, sort of

Yesterday my hubby went to the bank and someone had just brought in a bag of their inheritance. The poor clerk was having a tough time trying to roll up the Ike dollars and Kennedy halves. My hubby thought he would save her the trouble and buy them and bring them home to me.
His heart was in the right place.

The coins are obviously uncirculated and in very good bu condition, mostly yellowish toned. 34$ of Ikes and 24$ of Kennedys. Most are 1977 p and d, with a couple each of 78 and 79's with p and d mint marks.

I already have fine examples of these for my albums and I do not need them. But, of course, roll searchers cannot help but want to know what is 'really' there.

All I found that was interesting is two of the Ikes and three of the Kennedy's had machine doubling on the reverse in varying degrees.
Now I am going to roll them up and take them back to the bank and get some real money for all my work.:smile

It really depends on the banks that you use and where you live. I've heard other members on the board say that their banks have coin counters much like Coinstar that is free to its customers. I think that is more the exception than the norm.

For most banks, they'd prefer to take coins that are counted and wrapped. Some banks may require that you put your name and account number on each roll. Not many banks would appreicate you coming in with a sack of loose coins.

Our credit union charged us 25 cents PER ROLL just to accept and that's why we chose to go with Coinstar.

The other issue is the, "Don't dump where you get rolls" philosphy. Many roll searchers (me included) recommend that you don't dump your discarded coins at the same branch where you do day to day banking and certainly not where you get your rolls to search.

Personally, I just drop into any of the large banks around town (there are hundreds of banks where I live) and ask for "customer rolled coins". It's been my experience that they are more fruitful than the plasti-wrapped one.

    Good luck!

    Stan

My bank wants anything from 1 cent through 25 cents brought in one big bag... If you bring in rolls they will break them open to put through their coin counter...

Anything larger and they have to hand count them... Wonder what they are gonna do when I take in $300.00 worth of Kennedy's...

Hi and sorry it took me so long to reply. I have only been roll searching and making bank stops since about Sept. 2007 so not that long. So far I have managed to trade up to gold twice because it takes a long time to get enough 40% to make trading worth while. I don't want to trade for 1/10 oz. so I keep searching until I find enough for 1/14 to 1/2 oz.

    10/21/07 ~ 1st trade: $60 FV 40% halves = 1/4 oz. + $22 cash - Total cost for 1/4 oz. = $38
    2/17/08 ~ 2nd trade: $90 FV 40% halves + $4 FV 90% halves = Total Cost for 1/2 oz. = $94

I have 3/4 oz. gold for $132 so unless gold drops below $528, I'm ahead of the ballgame. Of course anything's possible but I'm happy with the end result of my roll searching. Right now I have about $30 FV, (worth about $158) so I would get maybe $145 in trade value and that's not enough for 1/4 oz. Hopefully April will be fruitful in the silver hunt and I can get another 1/4 - 1/2 oz of cheap gold. It's really not just the idea of cheap gold, it's the thrill of the hunt and many will agree, that this is part of the fun of roll searching. When you see silver, you fell like you found hidden treasure :)

    Did a bag of $1000 in halves last night, found 3 proofs 1990, and 2 2004's. Only 1 40% 68 and the big find a 1961-d franklin.

My bank teller came through today. She saved 20 rolls that a customer brought in. I purchased 15 rolls and 3 rolls turned out to be 40% silver!! I was able to pull a few AU/BU from the 70's too. Guess everyone gets lucky now and then.

OBW Lincoln Cents from Defunct Cali Bank.

Went to the bank last week and specifically asked for $10 "customer rolled pennies". They stuck all the rolls in a bank bag, took my Hamilton and I was sent on my way. When I got home, I pulled out the rolls, I pulled out some bank rolled Lincolns and my frist impression was... "WTH? I thought I said CUSTOMER wrapped!" Upon closer inspection, though, nine of the 20 rolls I got were indeed bank rolled 1980 and 1979 unc. cents from a bank that was defunct in 1981 named "Crocker National Bank". Actually they were bought out by Midland Bank (UK) in 1981. That's what I love about roll searching. A little bit of history in every roll.

Not quite sure what to do with them.... ebay maybe?

Im not sure what banks you guys use, but Out of the 5 banks that I go to.......I aksed for customer rolled coins, and you know what the reply was...." What are those?" lol So i guess even when a customer brings in change it still has to go through the counter....

Also note to anyone who banks with Lasalle Bank. Pretty soon Lasalle will officially be switching over to Bank of American. Bank of American will no longer be providing a coin counter service. At least this is what I was told by a bank manager. Thought I would share
