Well, the 1906-D Barber half is lost with the US Post Office. It never was delivered. Hate for a quality coin to get lost like this.
The last known postal worker to touch it was across the street from my house and updated the status as "no access to delivery location" which makes no sense as it was a signature required package to a house with a mailbox. No delivery attempt notification was left at the house.
Have you questioned the postal worker who delivers packages in your area? I stalk those guys when my stuff goes missing. ...by the way, that’s the same notification I get if I’m not at home when packages w/ delivery confirmation and signature are attempted to be delivered. I really hate that they stop tracking the package whereabouts in the system after the first attempt... it’s idiotic and defeats the whole purpose.
Yes, I talked to the carrier. That day, there was a huge amount of mail and 3 carriers were deployed to help. My carrier was not the one who updated the status.
I remember a number of years back when I lived in rural Oklahoma. I was expecting several signature required packages containing several coins worth over $1k to be delivered on a Saturday. The status that day was that they were out for delivery. As I was walking down my driveway to the mailbox, about a half mile from the house, I saw the weekend mail carrier drive away from my mailbox. When I got to the mailbox there were no packages. Sunday morning as I was heading to town I thought I'd check the mailbox. Lo and behold the packages containing my coins were there. My guess was the carrier saw the packages in her car after she finished her route and dropped them into the mailbox, without getting the required signatures. The following week I got a call from the local postmaster about whether I received the coins and if I did would I stop at the post office on my way home from work and sign for them. If I was a dishonest person I probably could have told them no and not only got the coins, but also got a refund from the seller claiming they were lost by the postal service. It made me wonder how often this happens.
If the point of tracking and signature confirmation is to track the package location during the process, I think if they attempt to deliver it and the signer isn’t home to accept, tracking should update when it returns to the facility as “Arrived At Post Office” just like it does when it first gets there, then “Out for Delivery” a second time, etc. until it is signed for. For my location at least, currently it just says “no access to delivery location” and then no further tracking info until they attempt to deliver a second time and scan as “Delivered.” That interim period being unaccounted for makes no sense IMO when we are paying more for delivery confirmation with safe delivery as the final goal.
Yeah, I get what you're saying... I'm just flabbergasted that tracking stops after the 1st attempt like that!
Ah, gotcha. Yeah, all sorts of fun... this coin is in my possession currently, but you’d never know it from the tracking right now: I realize these guys are on very tight schedules but this stuff happens constantly.
Wow! Amazing collection! And my dream coin too, the 1792 half disme. The 1867 trime is amazing as well. Lots of beautiful specimens there. Which one is your favorite and why?
