I don't detect so don't know the details of PAS, however, I thought one of the purposes was to record the details of artifacts found, so the information wasn't lost to history. A PAS reference may also help with the price.

Very interesting, though I am not in a position to determine authenticity or not. Getting the vital signs of the coin (weight in grams, diameter in millimeters) would be helpful as suggested above.

@Tlc bearing in mind that if this can be authenticated, provenance is becoming more and more important. It would be totally worthwhile in the long run to run it through PAS (provided you have the landowner's approval of cours). Something to think about. The better auction houses (think Southerby's) would probably not touch it without.

Perhaps someone with acsearch account could lookup the date the last one was sold and how much it raised.

Fair enough. But you do need to get it authenticated. Phone the Ashmolean, if they can't do it, they may know someone who will. Best of luck and let us know how you get on. I am fascinated :)

A general observation: the surface of your coin, both obverse and reverse, is the oddest looking texture I've ever seen in a picture of a Roman gold coin. This alone makes me very wary.

The weight of 6.4 g. is well below the minimum weight of any authentic example of this coin I've found on ACSEARCH. Most of these coins are in the 7.8 - 8.1 g. range, with one at 7.5 g. and one at 7.36 g. This makes your coin even more suspect.

These observations are not by any means conclusive, however, and due to the potential worth if the coin is indeed authentic, it may be worth spending the money to send it to an expert who would evaluate it in hand.

Have heritage London auction it for you, they get it graded and everything beforehand if it's real win if not you then oh well
