Been home recovering from a little surgery and am spending some time tidying up my overworked safe..... I am not a cent collector but it seems back in 2009 I plucked some of the centennial reverse cents from circulation and tossed them in the safe. I was about to add them to my roll up for the bank stack. I got to thinking, I can’t recall seeing any in the wild. Is there any real reason to hang on to them?

I don't like them and spend very little time with them. Good to have you back Randy.

Two trains of thought here. I pull all of them out of circulation. One day I'll set down and take a look at them and see what catches my eye. Then the other that relates to the first is heck, throw them back. You don't need them and it'll make some young budding numismatist happy when they find a 2009 roll hunting! :)

There was a major recession in 2009, and as I remember it, the distribution of these coins was very uneven. Therefore it was hard to find a complete set in circulation. The mintages were very high, of course, but they are an interesting group.

There was a Lincoln commemorative silver dollar issued that year. There was a limited issue of the silver dollar and the four cents in a Proof set from the mint. I purchased that, I think that it is an attractive group of coins. I think that was the best of the Lincoln items that were offered. There was the added bonus that the Proof cents were in sold bronze, not the zinc, copper coated regular issue pieces.

If you decide to rid yourself of some of these please PM me and I will help you out. I don't recall seeing any of these in circulation for many years.

Edit: Didn't I read somewhere that for the centennial, the government minted the 2009 cents in copper?

This is what you mean, yes?

Aware or not, I’ve been languishing seemingly forever, lol, on two rolls coming from a trade in NM USA. I’ve never had a roll of Lincolns to open... ever. This one piece came from roll number one and I am pleased.

I live in NJ and since 2009 I have only been able to pluck 5 of these out of general circulation (no roll hunting). I have also noted that the 2009 nickels are almost nonexistent in circulation (with CRH).

There are 20 different 2009 Lincoln cents. All the cents sold by the Mint are the same copper composition as the original 1909 cents. The actual coins put into circulation are the copper coated composition of 2008. Copper Proof S. Copper uncirculated Mint sold P&D. Copper coated circulated P&D. I have all of them NGC certified.

Someone else pointed out the nickel situation some time ago in a thread on Jefferson nickels. And, as it would happen, I just went through 38 pounds of mixed US coins that belong to a friend. These came to me in three cotton sacks but I have no idea how many coins I looked at. There were NO 2009 Jefferson nickels at all, three 2009 Lincoln cents that had been badly abused and a single, great looking 1964 Roosevelt dime. I chose to cull all of the pre-1982 cents, and I kept the better looking quarters from 1965-1982. I also kept the THREE Jefferson nickels from 2005 that I found in all of this, but in all a bit discouraging for all of the hours I put into this.

My friend has more of these sacks of coins at his house. When he thinks of it, he takes a sack or two to the church, and others to local charities, but has offered to let me sift through all of them before he gives them away. Who knows? Maybe there's a 1916-D Merc in one of those bags.

If you think you'll be alive in 2109 then maybe hang on to them. They may be worth something.

@Randy Abercrombie ...there are some valuable doubled die Phila. "Formative Years"...dealing mostly with his fingers and the spine of his book.

I have only found 3 2009 LCC (Lincoln Centennial Cent) from general circ. in the past 4 years or so. They were all in very sad shape and were returned to the wild. I found and kept about 20 of them in 2013, when I went through 2 coin hoards my brother had accumulated, each hoard had about 500 coins of all denominations. The 2009s were uncirculated for the most part, as were most of the coins in the hoards. I returned to the wild any that were less than AU58, with a few exceptions for Pre-1982...I ended up keeping about 50% of both hoards.

Unfortunately, they are Zincolns. Fortunately, they are Lincoln Zincolns.

A lot of folks, like me, bought an uncirc. set and set them aside, just cool lookin' and different enough to be of mild interest...I think and agree the mintages were too high for them to have much value short term, but the Mint and Proof sets will be a different story 25 years from now.

My heirs will deal with those...Spark

IMO I don't think the 2009 Lincoln cents will ever be valuable given the amount minted. The lowest mintage is over 784 thousand Satin finish cents sold in the Mint sets. Ebay prices are pretty low, especially in rolls. As for the Nickels, I haven't found one yet and both the Denver and Philly mints made over 39 million each. I didn't see any on ebay for less than $2.00. Like @Spark1951, My heirs will deal with the ones I have.

Found the proof lens for $2, I think...the lens is showing about $10 retail in the latest month's Coin World coin values section. Each of these in PF 69 DCAM up to $25, retail. PhotoEditor_20190519_204231611.jpg PhotoEditor_20190519_204311450.jpg

I can't send any back in the wild. This date is my youngest grandbabies birth year. She's the biggest collector of all youngins. She loves them and can't get enough. I totally understand. Glad for her. She's the last (so far) of grandbabies. And special. Plus she's the owner of @Deacon Ray gift
