I probably already know the answer but thought I would ask anyway. Has anyone ever heard of the 80 réis that got countermarked 40 réis be flattened by the government? This is the first one I’ve ever seen like this, which is usually a bad sign. @Wal888 @Hiddendragon
Ive got an example of this coin. They all seem to have gotten counter stamped after a good bit of circulation. Entirely normal for this issue to be in poor shape.
No Sir, this one is oblong and flattened. It’s been some sort of heavy rolling device. I have a couple others of these where the details of the previous strike are prominent. This one has completely flat surfaces.
I think it may have been flattened after the C/S as PMD. Note how the recessed edges of the C/S also appear slightly oblong in the same direction (assuming it's not an artifact of the picture angle). Just a guess
Very good point. The slight discoloration south of the 40 C/S says it happened long after the C/S happened. Bummer. I wonder why someone would do that, I mean, it can’t be easy to have done this. I certainly don’t have the means to...
