While I was at the Philadelphia Mint today, I got 4 Quarters from the machine that they have to provide the latest quarters. I received 1 2019 American Memorial Park & 3 2017 Ellis Island. Then at the counter I bought 1 Eagle and 1 buffalo.
Sorry, guys... you lost me to the dark side #2558 1991 29¢ Numismatics / ANA 100yrs Grade? Mint, never hinged (MNH)
No, not really, though they were made for less than a full year, unlike the others. There are plenty of them out there- just perhaps not as many still hanging around in circulation as the other dates.
Awesome. Always a rush, seeing the flash of silver in the dirt, ain't it? Silver quarters and halves are lots of fun to pop out of the ground. Heck, it's all good.
Yes it is. The property I found this at is being taken back by the bank. It’s 90 years old and the owner’s aunt was the original owner. He said it was once a brothel, speakeasy and a place where Chicago gangsters in the 30s were known to vacation and hang out. The owner called me about looking for a lost ring that was originally his father’s and then he wore it but lost it. He asked me how much I charge to look and I told him nothing. I never charge but I do ask permission to hunt the whole property and allowed to keep anything else I found. He then told me he had paid 2 guys $150 to search and they claimed they found nothing. I told him I didn’t care and he agreed to my terms. Well I believe those 2 guys never went there. I immediately started finding coins. Memorials, wheats, Barber dimes, another silver Washington and a ‘53 Franklin. I searched the place over 3 days and the last day I found his ring. I called to notify him and told him I wanted to hunt a bit more and then I’d bring him the ring. He said he hoped I’d find something valuable. Well the good targets dried up and all I found was trash. As the sun was setting I dug up a small ball of aluminum foil. About 2 inches away was a second. And about a foot away I got another similar signal which I decided to leave. I was tired and ready to go home. I packed up and headed to my car. Halfway to the car I turned around and went back to dig that damned bit of foil. About 6 inches down I pulled out what I thought was a pull tab. But it had a stone attached and I realized it was a ring. A BIG stone. In fact because of the size of the stone I determined it was costume jewelry. I didn’t even knock the dirt plug from the ring. When I delivered the lost ring, the owner tried to give me money which I refused. Then I showed the second ring to his wife. She said she had never seen it before and she hoped it would be valuable. I laughed and put it back in my pocket. At home I handed the ring to my wife and went to get a shower. A few minutes later she yelled something at me that I couldn’t understand. She stuck her head in the bathroom and announced the ring was marked as 14K. I began to wonder if the stone might be real. The next day we took it to the jeweler to be sized and 3 of the sparklers on the side were gone. The jeweler examined it and told me the diamonds were real and so is the stone. It’s a 4 carat, emerald cut natural blue sapphire. He wouldn’t give me a possible value but urged me to get it appraised. I saw a post where another detectorist had found rings with a yellow sapphire and a smaller blue one. The Yellow was appraised at $5600 and the blue at $15,000. Sometimes karma pays off.
Took advantage of the drop in silver today and grabbed a little more than $50 in face of some Constitutional Silver. All walking Liberty’s for the half’s and nearly all Mercury’s for the dimes. Mixed a few dollars worth of Washington’s in to round it out. Found 4 Barbers in the dimes and a bunch of cool toners. I pick out whatever I want from his tub. Price today here in Texas is 10.3x so not too bad. Also picked this half dollar up for next to nothing over melt so couldn’t pass it up. Finally these are the coins that arrived from @LakeEffect that he sent me for finding a 2019 W Quarter in the wild. Amazing member and very thankful.
