And... this is why new members should consult the Cointalk community before sending off coins to get slabbed.

What did he think was so special about his 1979 cent, 1982 quarter, and 1970 quarter? I get these sort of coins as change all the time.

About the 1974 cent, I have dozens of 1974 cents in AU or MS condition, but I'm not planning to have them graded anytime soon.

I kind of have the feeling some dealer took him for a ride and he's trying to get his money back for the most part.

I dunno... I mean, it never occured to me that PCGS would label a coin as having "genuine damage." And it is Mint State. Could you create a PCGS Registry Set of Original Damage coins? I guess the key would be how you damage them, what you counter-strike them with.

Standard Oil was broken up in to 34 companies in 1911 (Wikipedia for "Esso"). So you get 34 Uncirculate 1911 coins and strike them with the logos of the Standard Oil spin-offs... Then have it slabbed and registered with PCGS. Then put it up for auction.

Or you could start with commemorative half dollars with California themes and overstrike the logos of Silicon Valley tech firms. Put that away for a few decades...

The possibilities here are endless. It could be a whole new area of collecting, Genuine Damage Mint State Coins. There would a society... a newsletter... a website... podcasts... And arguments...

... Well, not until you genuinely damage them for your registry set...

Do you really not understand that label?

    It wasn't labeled "genuine damage"

It was labeled a genuine coin that has damage and otherwise would have had an MS grade.

Eh, didn't see any emojis or Lols or even Lulz. If it was actual sarcasm it's hard to tell here with what gets said in other threads

Stupidity should not be treated like a handicap. Ive said it once and I will say it again. We have access to unlimited information at our fingertips. Doesnt take much research to figure out what's wrong with these listings.

The $3.82 shipping charge is a deal breaker. Otherwise I'd be all over that $18,000 beauty.
