Wanted to share this Lincoln and get some opinions. Definitely thin (1.4g) and appears to have two retained objects on the obverse. Different colors so I’m thinking from a different planchet? Reverse has a ghost image of Lincoln and a piece missing after-strike. Trying to figure out how this could end up with a good die strike on both sides and a ghost image on the rev. If a uniface strike this would have a strong obverse and only a incuse Lincoln ghost image on the reverse. If it was double struck with another planchet it should show flattened weak details on the reverse, not a ghost image. If a double struck with a brockage on the second strike I would expect stronger or more expanded details transferred to the reverse. Could it possibly be just a regular strike of a thin planchet with retained pieces AND a greasy ghost image? Thinking if it was a vice job more details would be transferred. Also, they’d have to risk a thin planchet coin to make it..
I think your coin was struck on a Thin Planchet from the end of a strip. Which is why it has a Weak Strike and ghosting. And being thin did not do well in the upset mill. It has two observable Retained Laminations on the obverse. The indent on the reverse could be an Unretained Lamination. The scratches On Abe's face are post strike due to the way metal is moved at the "R" in trust, as it bends inward. Possibly hit with Feeder Fingers while being ejected from press.. Your coin shows no wear from circulation, so I think it was picked from a fresh bank roll or mint bag of coins and has been in storage since then. Nice find. Where did you acquire it?
