Take the coin to a jewelry store and ask them to weigh it for you, or to a coin dealer. Good luck.

I found this in my mom's old coins. Due to the copper spots, I'm guessing this 1990 (no mint mark) was dipped in a silver substance?

You guess is close enough. It looks like it was a bad plating experiment. Plating solutions aren't silver colored, but as long as you stay out the chem lab, most people won't give you a hard time about some minor chemistry technicalities.

It sounds like you have a normal copper plated zinc cent.. Why bother?

I've been researching for info on my 1990 silver looking penny. I did read what I could find on this group forum, and I didn't c any resolution. Did anyone figure it out? Also tried uploading a pic or two duhhh need simple instructions pls. It weighs 2.5 g and it is not magnetic. It looks like it's copper coated not the other way around. I even checked to see if the us made any other countries coins that yr. no such luck it has the it a does match the circumference of my other Penny's. So mine makes the 5 the one I've heard of.

I am a bit confused, you say it looks like it is copper coated, all 1990 cents are copper coated. Do you mean it is coated with something silver over the copper?

Sounds like a normal cent that has been mutilated in some way. We see them all the time.

OK, is it silver looking or copper looking? If copper looking it is a garden-variety copper plated zinclon (zinc center). If it is silver color, it is a normal 1990 zincoln that has taken part in a plating experiment. All zincoln cents weigh 2.5 g ans none are magnetic. Posting pictures is easy peasy if you have it saved as a file on your device, just choose "Upload a File", find the file name, upload and choose "Full Size"

Did you read any of the posts with answers on this thread. There are no silver cents. Especially in 1990.

A popular high school chemistry experiment zinc plates cents. This looks like one.

I also have a 1990 D silver looking penny. It can’t just be a coincidence. Why aren’t people posting about other years? Mine has been in a drawer for many years. I posted about it in 2016. Min is pretty dirty but in good shape. IMG_2832.jpeg IMG_2831.jpeg

The zinc is corroded, kind of like German zinc during the wars.
Cleaning it even soaking it in simple distilled water will only make it worse, acetone won't help, it will give the zinc a very dry dull look.

Actually zinc cents of many different years like this show up all the time here, it's a pretty common occurrence!
